Rounding Third by Line Drive June 20th 2018

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. Baseball has returned to the diamonds of the North Eastern Baseball Association after the Queens Birthday. The men and women headed down the Hume to Benalla over the past weekend to play Benalla and Porepunkah respectively. In the early game Rangers Orange jumped out to an early lead against the hosts Benalla Bandits. The game was played hard and played fair with Benalla eventually coming out on top. The final score was 12-9 Bandits way. The weather slowly improved over the course of the day and by the late game, the weather was quite pleasant. In a topsy turvy tussle where Porepunkah were on top early, the Rangers fought back, then to see Porepunkah draw level. Finally Rangers Black got the job done in a very workman like manner. The end result was Rangers Black 12 defeating Porepunkah Panthers 10. Once again thank you very much to Benalla Bandits hospitality. To our loyal supporters who came along to watch the game in rather cool conditions. We do appreciate your support. Now onto what has been happening down at the Ranch.
Rangers Represent    
    The State winter championships were run and won over the long weekend down in Geelong. The North East team once again acquitted themselves well against the other winter associations. The boys fought hard all weekend and went unbeaten in the division two final against Sunraysia. After Sunraysia got out to an early lead the North East boys went to work whittling down the lead. A late innings fightback narrowed the margin but unfortunately they ran out of time and Sunraysia were the winners on the day. From all accounts it was another cracking weekend of baseball in Geelong. To the Ranger guys Nathan Pool, Aaron Parker, Ross Johnson, Rob Seymour and Tetsuya Kamiyama, support crew and families who went away, great job and till next time.

    Part two of the 2018 North Eastern Baseball Association began over the past weekend across the diamonds of Albury and Benalla respectively. It sees the Wangaratta Rangers working hard and playing some good baseball. It was mentioned by hitting guru and man of baseball  shoes, Tetsuya Kamiyama that there is only six weeks of the season left. That theoretically means only six Thursday nights too. So come along put your hand up to cook a meal and get involved. Only six weeks (not including finals) left! Training is from 6pm Thursday nights Targoora Park. All are welcome

Lucky Ticket? You have yours yet?
    Yes it is that time of year again. Seems to sneak up on everyone involved down at The Ranch. The 2018 Lucky ticket is here. Party guru Kelsey “Dropsy” Burder has got the tickets and is asking you out there, the Ranger fan, to get your ticket as soon as possible as they generally sell out in quick time. Lucky Ticket night this year is on Saturday 21st of July beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $25 and are available from club members. If you wish to purchase one let Kelsey know.
Rangers cap addiction
    Rob “Butts” Seymour is always thinking of how to make the Rangers stand out on the diamond. He is the man who came up with the great looking Rangers warm up shirts and has been dabbling in finding the right cap just to make the Ranger uniform “pop” a bit more. A few weeks back while having a chat around the Thursday night dinner table, Butts noticed Cam “The Soak” Scott’s cap he purchased from a club back home in Melbourne. He noticed the style of cap was different and it had a three dimensional graphic. This got Butts thinking. Last week our new caps arrived. This time the ‘W’ on the front is raised and the cap has a more rounded peak. This does not mean a lot to those non-cap aficionados, but to those in the know, it is another evolution in Rangers merchandise. Now available on Thursday nights from Buttsy. Next in line possible shell jackets?
O’Neil is being Old School
    Line Drive is beginning to think that Rangers Black second baseman Shaun “Old School” O’Neil is looking for ways to get his name in Rounding Third each edition. This week sees O’Neil making the routine not so routine. Double play ball hit O’Neil tries to tag runner, misses and gets the out at first and runner does not advance! Yes that’s right the runner on first base did not advance. Though to Old Schools credit he did try to fool the umpire by tagging the runner at first with the opposite hand. Still a play that many have never actually seen before. What will happen in the Bermuda Triangle at second base for Wangaratta Rangers Black next week versus Wodonga? Stay tuned to next weeks edition of Rounding Third.
Easy Street Boys are at it again.
    Each week the Easy street boys seem to devise new ways to entertain themselves and their friends. The stories you hear from this crew of mates are just outstanding. The latest involving the Nintendo game Super Mario Kart among other things, is just amazing. The writer cannot explain it but one thing is, the game sounded pretty fun. If you want to know  just ask their leader Kelsey “Dropsy” Burder and his second in command Kyle “Gilly” Gilmore. Enjoy your half yuletide festivities gentlemen.
Rugby League State of Origin Sunday 
    Now this is not related to baseball but to the club we have but man of the radio Nathan “FOMO” Pool was speaking to Rangers Baseball major sponsor over the past week and the conversation quickly turned to the Rugby League State of Origin. Mark from Cafe Martini and Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta would like all of you out there to know that Game 2 of the State of Origin will be shown live in the bar at Cafe Martini from 7pm. If you have nothing to do Sunday night head in for a feed and watch the game in the warm surroundings to the Bulls Head Hotel.
Fines are stacking up
    Yes the dreaded tin was out in force over the past round and the Ranger men and women are paying their dues where they need to. It was noted that when a coin is dropped into the tin, it does not make a sound. Looks like there is a lot of notes in that tin already and the season is just over half way. Rossco “pen hater” Johnson did not pay his over the weekend as he gave a very valid reason for not wearing a Rangers hoodie. I think the phrase “If I could buy one then I would” A good enough reason not to pay the money isn’t it tin master Kyle “Gilly” Gilmore? On another note is Daniel “The Griff” Griffin going to let the group where they are going on Ranger Ramble VII? A date has been set. October 19-21.
Junior news
This weekend between the Ranger vs Warriors games in Wodonga, Wangaratta rangers warmly invites all junior players to come have a hit and throw in Wodonga. Rounding Third by Line Drive June 6th 2018

Hello and welcome to the first true winter edition of Rounding Third. Over the past couple of weeks the Rangers teams squared off, with Rangers Black getting the chocolates and bragging rights over their Rangers Orange counterparts. It was a competitive game watched on by a healthy crowd at the annual Ranger family day. The game gave the opportunity for many players to try playinh a different position and have a good hit out against their fellow Rangers brothers and sisters. A big shout needs to go out to “The Pres” Tony “Spinner” Smith who worked tirelessly all day to put on a great show for all the Wangaratta families and supporters. It has been said before, but it needs saying again, clubs are only as good as the people who run them. We are fortunate and very privileged to have the likes of Spinner involved in the club. Now onto other news form the past couple of weeks. Who has been up to what, and other club business.
Listen to Rossco Old School
    In the Orange versus Black game, Shaun “Old School” O’Neil had one of those days that you like to forget. Early on in the game, a fly ball was hit straight up in the air. Nine times out of ten or ninety nine times out of a hundred old school would be a safe bet. However this was the one occasion. Much to the surprise pitcher Jason “Sunscreen” Jonker, the ball spilled out of Old Schools new pristine glove. “Old School” said it was Pooly’s fault and blamed the bird that flew past the sun in the sky, and it being on a Sunday, for missing the catch. Later on in the innings another ball was it up in O’Neil’s direction. Number one pen hater from Porepunkah, Ross “Rossco” Johsnon bellowed, “SHAUN!!!!!!”, making it evidently clear that he needed to catch the next one. Luckily for Shauns wits he did. At the end of the first inning O’Neil’s fielding was all square. Remembering a quote from a previous edition, a poor tradesman blames his tools, Old School.
 
Jenko’s gets a little shirty.
    it was a rather shaky start to the first derby game of the year for the black team. Resident first baseman and man about town, and the state, Cam “The Soak” Scott notified the coaches that it would be best to give up the position to multi sport athlete and coming first baseman, Scott “The Beard” Jenkins. As the game began, Jenko trotted out to right field where Cam was also headed. He was surprised and a little bit dark that he was now playing first base. “No one told me” retorted Jenkins. “Stuff it I will use this glove” was another comment. Fair to say like the aforementioned Shaun O’Neil, the first innings was not all plain sailing. He was still mumbling about it once he came off the diamond. Must be something about playing first base and getting grumpy at Wangaratta!
 
Raining hits for Gilmore
    Current master of the tin Kyle “Can hit more” Gilmore had a day out against the Rangers Black pitchers. Everything he saw was dispatched with ease to all parts of the outfield throughout the game. The only thing stopped him from having a perfect day out with the maple was fellow Esmondian, Kelsey “Dropsie” Burder who certainly did not live up to that nickname with the catch he took to rob Gilly of a perfect day. Slide in, dive forward, take the catch and stick the landing is how you can describe Burders take. Still a great hitting display from one of the Ranger favorites.
New man on the bump
    Over the past few weeks, man of facial hair Brad “Undies” Murdoch, has become a bit of an innings eater for the Rangers Orange guys and girls. It is great to see the big spindly frame of a man get up there and throw strikes. This was first the case in Rangers vs Warriors game a few weeks back and he repeated the efforts in the local derby. It helps when another gets on the hill and gives our wonderful throwers a well deserved rest. Look out for his wicked fast ball! Word is he is developing a second pitch. Wonder if he will call his new pitch the anteater?
 
Where are we going Griff?
    The season is already half gone. Many around Ranger land are now turning their attention to the end of season trip Ranger Ramble VII will be upon us in October. This year was suppose to be a far trip but it has been altered slightly to a mystery trip. At this moment only Daniel “The Griff” Griffin knows where the Ranger faithful are headed. Many think Nathan “FOMO” Pool has guessed the place, but even he is not so sure of where that is. More to the point what will the theme be? After seeing the social media posts of the Esmond street boys and girls, could double denim be the theme? More details will be released soon about the mystery destination.
 
The big 6
    Talk around the dinner table last week always seems to go back to the trip. It was remarked that there are only six Rangers that have been on all six trips. Now they know who they are, but can anyone else outside the inner sanctum of dinner last Thursday night name them? In all honesty there is no surprise who the six are. But will they all make it to Ranger Ramble VII?
 
Round robin round 2018
    The North Eastern Baseball Association had a ‘Cent a Number’ draw and round robin day over the past weekend. Players from all clubs in the association came together to play in mixed teams and have a good fun day of baseball. Judging by the images taken by Daniel Blanchard on the North Eastern Baseball Association Facebook page, it was a cracking day. Others I have spoken to enjoyed the day and welcomed the efforts of all involved in the association. It was a good day for the Ranger family as Jenko took second place and The Pools took 3rd place.
 
Winter Championships are here
    the 2018 Victorian Winter Baseball Championships are here again and the North Eastern Baseball Association have once again put a very competitive side together for their annual pilgrimage to Geelong. Managed once again by Ed Simmons, the North Eastern men are looking to go back to back. This year it looks like it will be a very even division with both Latrobe Valley and Sunraysia putting together strong squads. Don’t count out Dandenong U/23 either. The boys have one game Saturday and two on the Sunday, with the final games on Monday deciding on who takes the shield home in 2018. To all players and supporters who are heading down to Geelong this year, good luck keep warm and most importantly have a good time playing baseball. Line Drive wants to hear about it all when you come back.
Season part 2
    The 2018 North Eastern baseball Association returns after the June long weekend. Both Rangers squads are looking forward to a good second half. Coach Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo and Mick “Skip” Wyatt were impressed with how their chargers, Rangers Orange played in the first seven games. Likewise man of may nicknames and hats Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool with his Rangers Black squad. Aaron “Azza” Parker is looking forward to a big second half as are stalwarts Brendon “Frenchy” French and Brenton “Plugger” Miller. Damien “Junior” French is looking to build on his good start with the bat too. One thing isfor sure, there will be plenty of fun on and off the diamond in the coming ten weeks. Just remember, if you are unavailable please place it on teamapp so the coaches know in advance. As said before the more information the better.

Rounding Third By Line Drive May 22nd 2018

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. The skies were grey over the diamonds of the North Eastern Baseball Association during the weekend, but that did not stop the men and women of the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club from heading back up the Hume to Wodonga for the weekend’s round of matches. In the early game, Rangers Black overcame Wodonga Warriors White 28-2. In the late game, Rangers Orange pushed Warriors Maroon right to the end. The final score was 12-5. Once again thank you to the hospitality of Wodonga Warriors and to all our travelling supporters who made the trip. Next week, Rangers Orange will be playing Rangers Black in Wangaratta. More about that later. Now onto what has caught the eye of Line Drive over the past couple of weeks.
Who was that on the screen?
    It may have not been mentioned in a previous edition, but it has not gone unnoticed. The good Doc’s Sean and Sarah Warfe have been living the good life in Canada over the past few weeks. The Warfes were lucky enough to be in attendance to watch the Seattle Mariners no hit the Toronto Blue Jays. Not only was being there awesome but then they were pictured on the jumbo screen of the stadium and the television broadcast. To complete the occasion they got a game ball and a hat signed. Nice work Doc’s. One question to be asked is to the master of the tin, Kyle Gilmore. If you are on television in the states then is that a larger donation to the tin due to exchange rates?
Where is Beaker?
    The question has to be asked. Where is Rob “Beaker” Barbour? Last sighted four weeks ago. Now we all know he is alive but his reasons for not being available are very blunt. The past two weeks have been very simple “No good”. Well  we hope this week you are felling a bit better Beaker. Hope to see you down at he Ranch this coming Sunday.
North Eastern Rep Baseball time 
    It’s back for another year and five Rangers players are heading to Geelong over the long weekend to test themselves against the other Victorian Winter Baseball associations. Last year the boys from Kelly country took out the division 2 title, and are looking to go back to back this year. Once again there has been a fantastic response from those in the competition who have put their hand up and wish to represent the North Eastern Baseball Association. I am lead to believe that it will be a full list of players. The Winter Championships will be held over the Queens birthday long weekend in Geelong. More information in upcoming editions of Rounding Third.
 
Boof visits the Ranger Ranch
    Man of the DBA radio show Rob “Boofa” Bowen made an appearance at Wangaratta a couple of weeks ago. It was a bit of a mission for him to find the ground at first. After organising with Cam ‘The Soak” Scott to meet him at the ground in Murdoch road, Boof got close to the ground and called Cam. Cam assured him the ground was not too far away and keep heading out the road and if you see Ranger man (and now Ranger kid) you are there. Cam arrives at the ground to find no one arrived yet. Another phone call. Boof had driven out 8kms to the new roundabout at Oxley. Finally after a little more two way communication Boof found the ground. He had got tired of the food where he was staying and wanted to come find some baseball people. Lucky for him a good crew turned up in poor conditions for Azza’s Burgers and a good chat. It was great to catch up and talk about all the great things and projects we have in the pipeline for Wangaratta Rangers and North Eastern Baseball. thanks for the visit Boof. Thanks for the kind words on the baseball forum too.
Rangers Family fun day.
    This coming Sunday Rangers Orange play host to Rangers Black in a shootout at Targoora Park. However that is not the only action going on down at The Ranch. It is going to be the annual Wangaratta Rangers Family Day and the club welcomes all players, sponsors and supporters. The flyer below explains what is on offer and your hosts The Wangaratta Rangers hope to see you all there. The game begins at 1:45pm. Rangers Orange will be looking to get some revenge on Rangers Black. As always it will be a competitive game played in great spirit. Spread the word. The more spoken about Wangaratta Baseball, the better.

Cent a number returns.
    The good folk who run The North Eastern baseball Association currently have a little cent a number raffle going on. The premise is simple. Take an envelope, open the envelope, whatever the ticket number that’s how much you pay. An example is if you draw ticket 650 then the cost of the ticket is $6.50. Simple? The cent a number draw is going to be held down at Targoora Park Wangaratta on Sunday 3rd of June. Discounted drinks and food will be provided. If you want a ticket please get in contact with anyone who plays in the North Eastern Baseball Association. All clubs have tickets to sell. Your involvement in the association is appreciated.
Round Robin 3rd of June
    In case you have noticed on the Facebook site on Sunday 3rd of June in conjunction with the cent a number draw the North Eastern Baseball Association will be holding a round robin day. Players from all clubs are encouraged and warmly invited to make themselves available where shortened games of baseball with mixed teams will take to the diamonds of Targoora Park. Each club is looking for numbers and I know at Wangaratta, there has been a call out for players who are available. So if you are available please support the association and their efforts. if you are interested in coming down for a look and  buy a ticket in the cent a number raffle then that would be great too.
Thursday night feeds
    As mentioned before the Thursday night feeds have been impressive. However things are heading towards the depths of winter and the meals are slowing down. For those who travel to train and play, the Thursday night feed is fantastic, as at times, one who travels may not arrive home till after 9:30pm. This week will dinner be snags and bread. It doesn’t matter what you cook, it is all about getting together having a chat and laugh together after training. If you just do one for the year then that is one less someone else chooses to do. If you do choose to provide a meal the club will reimburse you for your efforts.
Merchandise update
    Yes it’s all about the merch down at Targoora Park. Beanies are still available from Scott “Thirtysomething” Jenkins and new caps have been order by “Boston” Rob Seymour. Boston thinks he has found the holy grail of caps and when they arrive they will look great. If you wish to order other items please talk to radio personality Nathan Pool about warm up tops, numbered playing tops and just for a good chat really. Rounding Third By Line Drive May 8th 2018

  Hello and welcome to this edition of Rounding Third. As mentioned in past editions, the North Eastern Baseball Association 2018 season is well underway with the guys and girls who make up Wangaratta’s only baseball club have a very successful start to the winter season. Four rounds have been completed and the Rangers Black men and women sit on top of the ladder with four wins from four games. After a close first week loss, Rangers Orange got back on track nicely recording three wins in row after defeating Porepunkah in a hard fought game on Sunday. The end score was 9-4. In the late game Rangers Black ran out comfortable winners over Benalla 28-1. A big thank you to all of the support week in week out, those who travel with the club all over the North East to support the Rangers. It is greatly appreciated. Now what else has been happening since the last edition? Line Drive will do his best to bring you all up to speed.
Four games in and the Rangers are firing.
    As mentioned above the Wangaratta Rangers boys and girls have got off to a cracking start. This is very evident in the case of Rangers Orange. After a rather indifferent year with the bat last year, there has been a noticeable shift in hitting this season. The bats have come alive and all players are contributing. Throughout the line up, on and off the bench, all players are contributing nicely. Coaches Mick “The Skipper” Wyatt and Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo are leading very well and the players are responding. It was pleasing to see the mustached one, Brad “undies” Murdoch chasing down everything hit in his direction out in centre field. His long stride gets to fly balls that many of us may not reach!
Rangers Black has had a shifting order over the start of the season due to availability, but they have also started the season in solid fashion. Media darling Nathan “FOMO” Pool is working his chargers hard, challenging each player to work hard at  training on Thursday night. This was definitely the case last week, when Aaron “Azza” Parker’s hard work paid off in the game against Bears Green by having a three hit game. Keep getting along to training from 6pm Thursday night ladies and gentlemen. Hard work pays off.

Nathan Pool- The Voice of Wangaratta Baseball
    For years the club has had a good relationship with the local media outlets throughout Wangaratta, but for some reason this year it has gone to a new level. Generally you hear the results on the radio maybe on a Wednesday or a Thursday and some other times maybe a snippet about what is going on down at the club. Each week, Coach and man of many hats, talents and never misses out on anything Nathan “FOMO” Pool, is a regular contributor on the radio each week.  Many have remarked to Line Drive throughout the North East, that they have heard baseball on the radio in the morning. For this writer, this is most pleasing, as it gives us a presence in the North East along with the other clubs of the association. Mind you Pool does like to mention one player an awful lot in those radio snippets. Isn’t that right O?
Pesky pens
    There were mutterings around at Porepunkah over the weekend about a pen being destroyed on the ground. Now this sounds strange to speak about, but it got the tongues wagging on who got upset with this pen. It started when Ross “Rossco” Johnson was quite upset with himself for doing something wrong while batting, that he decided to try and pick the pen up and throw it off the ground. However he failed miserably at his attempt. So incensed with this, he took to smashing the pen to bits with the end of the bat. New fines master Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore remarked that we could have a new leader in a certain “anger” award this early on in season 2018. One wants to know what did the pen do to deserve this tragic end Rossco?
Junior Baseball Week 1 2018
    It was pleasing to see over the weekend how Benalla, Porepunkah and Wangaratta pooled their resources to have some junior baseball happening between games. It was great to see that two little mini games were played and the turnout from the three clubs was encouraging. Some have come for another hit from last year while there were a few new faces as well. The North Eastern Baseball Association and it’s clubs are looking to keep pursuing this between games during the 2018 season. If you wish to know more contact your local club and they will point you in the right direction.
The tin custodian 
    After a couple of years Daniel “The Griff” Griffin has relinquished the reins of the tin. Many wondered who was going to take over this prestigious role within the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. This year, Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore has taken up the role of master of the tin. Already he has left his mark on the role. As usual there are the fines for strikeouts, errors, incorrect uniform and photos in the local newspaper, Gilmore has added a new twist. The twist is, if any of your Rangers apparel with the club logo on it touches the ground then a fine shall be paid. It does not discriminate, anything with the logo is payable. Already, a couple of weeks into the new regime and many have learnt real fast to respect their Ranger merchandise a little bit more. Though some other choices of apparel have drawn fines too haven’t they Old School?
 
The old phantom play
    Late in the second game many of the Ranger spectators were wondering what the heck was going on with what should have been a straight forward out to first base. Rob “Butts” Seymour decided to take it upon himself with the help of Tetsu “Iron Chef’ Kamiyama to spice up a straight forward position 6 to 3. Ball is hit to Butts at shortstop where most would throw to first base. He decided to flick it towards Tetsu who at second base was a bit shocked by receiving the ball and had to then make a quick throw over to Owen “O” Godenzi at first for the out. Dinner Thursday? Rangers have got you sorted.
    Thursday night dinner has been a roaring success so far in season 2018. From Spinner’s spiced mince and potato, to last week at short notice, Tetsu’s Burgers, many have been taking the opportunity after training to sit around have some dinner and have a laugh. This week Aaron “The Butcher” Parker is cooking his amazing steak sandwich. If you wish to come for a look or partake in a great meal please comment on the poll on the Rangers Facebook page.

Rounding Third by Line Drive April 17th 2018

 Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. With the Cods having sunk back to the depths of the rivers of the Ovens Valley, attention has now turned to North Eastern Baseball Association. The 2018 winter season began last Sunday with all four games being played in Wangaratta. It was a good chance for the two Rangers teams to get off to a good start in the new season. In the early game, Rangers Orange tackled Benalla. Rangers Orange jumped out to an early lead and held this advantage for much of the game. As the game progressed, the Benalla bats got going taking the win 11-9. Much to like about the Orange performance. A bit more work on the track and things will be right. In the afternoon game, good hitting backed up good pitching with Rangers Black jumping out to an early lead  14-5 win. Next week will see both Ranger squads heading up the Hume freeway to take on Wodonga Warriors. Good luck to all for round two. Now it has been a while since we have spoken about the characters down at the ranch so lets find out what they have been up to.
Mr 300
    One that almost slipped through the crack, but thanks to a couple of watchful eye in the club, a certain milestone did not go unnoticed. Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool played his 300th game for Wangaratta Rangers on the weekend against Porepunkah. Pool becomes the third Ranger to play 300 games behind Tetsu Kamiyama and Brendon French. The Wangaratta Chronicle came calling early in the week and judging by the number of well wishes and spectators at the game on Sunday, it shows that Pool is highly regarded not just in baseball but throughout Wangaratta and beyond. Pool did say at the end “It’s my 300th, It’s not like I am leaving or anything”. Congratulations Rubberarm. Here’s to not missing out on anything more.
Back hurt. No problem. Will hit home runs.
    Hitting guru and former Iron Chef, Tetsu Kamiyama began the 2018 season in fine style. Before the game Tets was saying his back was a bit sore and stiff and was not one hundred per cent. In his first at bat his back did not seem to bother him. He got a good piece of the ball and let the wind do the rest to hit his first home run in a few seasons. Many thought the wind definitely helped it get out, as it got up into the gulf stream and the over the fence. However his next at bat was a no doubter. With “Mr 300” Nathan Pool on deck and two runners on base, Tetsu’s swing was crisp and made that lovely ‘tock’ noise of wood and the ball screamed over the left centre field fence for his second home run in two at bats. Pool’s reaction to the second home run was priceless. While squatting he muttered some words that cannot be repeated in the column. Fair enough too. It is always a good sign when the hitting coach sets the tone for the day. Home runs are a good feeling though. Well done Tetsu.
New Kicks and tricks but still Old School
    After plenty of ribbing about his old glove and other equipment, Sean “Old School” O’Neil has finally given in and bought some new baseball gear. First to go in the bin were the footy boots. “That makes it official. No more footy for me” remarked Sean. Next was a new glove. More padding and ready to use. Unfortunately due to Rubberam pools stellar pitching his glove was not required to catch a ball. Never mind Old School. Always next week.
Thursday night training a roaring success
    As mentioned on the Facebook page by a good friend of Line Drive, a great turnout of players rolled their arms over and dynamically stretched their way through the night. It was by far the biggest turnout for the season so far, with over twenty five players and supporters in attendance. Now that may not sound like many but of that twenty five, many came for Thursday night dinner cooked by Cam “The Soak” Scott. Herb chicken and rice was dished up with your choice of drink from the fridge for $10. Seconds and thirds were had by all. This week looks like it might be a barbecue. The club is always looking to you out there to flex your culinary skills and dish up Thursday night meal for everyone. Those who travel do appreciate it. If you want to have a go at cooking for the men and women of Rangers drop us a line and I am sure nobody will be unhappy if you do.
Turn your car off Soak
    Cam “The Soak” Scott had a lot going through his mind on Thursday. As mentioned above, dinner was his priority for the Ranger guys and girls. So much so that in all his haste to get out and get organised left his car ignition on for the duration of training and dinner. Soak got a nice surprise when his battery was flat and wondering how he would get back to Yarrawonga. Lucky for him Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo and Mr 300 had not left.  Mr 300 made a call to Rob “Butts” Seymour who like a superhero swept in, started the car up and swept out again into the Wangaratta night. So if you live out of town  remember to turn your car off…..Soak.

The Doc, Sarah and Rossco are back! 
    With the start of a new season, it is always great to see some new and old faces. This year has seen the return of the “SW’s”, Sean “The Doc” Warfe and his wife Sarah Warfe. The Warfes spent the past year away in Bendigo and have returned  to Wangaratta. Sarah had her first game over the weekend against Porepunkah and was able to get on base in her first at bat. The Doc was his usual colorful best in the field, turning some very neat plays at third base. Another to return was Ross “Rossco” Johnson. Rossco was sure he was going to come off the bench just to ease himself back into playing. However due to a late change he was thrown behind the plate at catcher. He looked like he had never been away. The glove was working and his gadget legs were up to the task of stretching a single into a double. All day Rossco hit the ball hard and his work behind the dish was immaculate. Welcome back to Wangaratta Baseball Club. There are a couple of others to mention too but can’t put everything into the one edition can we? More to come on those characters over the next few weeks.
Footwear for training? Who needs it? Not Beaker! 
    It was noticed on Thursday night that an older player, who has been known to wear a bike helmet at times, was out in the field running around in some interesting footwear. Rob “Beaker” Barbour had wandered into training in his usual manner and many thought he was just down for a look being in thongs and all. This was not the case. He dispensed of the thongs and just went in bare feet on the new infield turf. Brave from a man who has the uncanny ability of getting hit anywhere on and off the diamond by a baseball.
Canteen a huge success
    Special mention needs to go out to new man of canteen and man of many hats Daniel “The Griff” Griffin for his running of the Rangers canteen over the weekend. From all reports the club sold out of most things and the roast beef rolls were a huge hit. Big thanks to his minions, those Esmond Street men who got in and gave him a hand too. Many hands make light work. Next home game is a few weeks away so get out on the diamond next week Griff.
The Tin returns
    Don’t forget out there that the tin is back in operation in season 2018. So if you make an error then make sure you pay your dues to the tin. It is a bit of fun, and light hearted banter is what we all want. There will be a couple of dollars owing from the weekend just gone, so the tin will be present on Thursday night. Those who choose to go on the end of season ramble do get a benefit from the tin.

Rounding Third Summer Edition 2 2018

Hello and welcome to another summer edition of Rounding Third. A month has passed since our last correspondence and boy, it has been a very busy month down at the Ranch. The ground is nice and green with all parts of the Ranger family doing their bit to keep it looking in tip top shape. Check out the handy work by Kevin “The Legend” Pool. Many are looking forward to standing around and having a can of soda on his handy work outside the rooms in season 2018.
Meanwhile Cods planning has been in full swing as well as the upcoming season in the North Eastern Baseball Association. Now let’s get down to business!
Cods update February
    It has been a very hectic month for the powers behind the Cods organisation. Accommodation has been booked. New shirts and caps are ordered and even for some Cods, the arm has been dusted off and rolled over. At this current moment The Cods are putting in two sides; 35 plus as per usual and for the first time in their four year history a 45 plus squad. In all there are approximately 30 Cods including coaching staff heading to Ballarat on 16th-18th of March. Now remember Cods out there to pay your insurances via your clubs website when it becomes available. At this current moment this is not available. All outstanding accounts need to be paid in full by March the 14th.
Support the Cods
    The Cod squad has become much larger in 2018. Not only there are two teams but man of trips Daniel “The Griff” Griffin and his merry men including Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore and Brad “Undies” Murdoch are heading to Ballarat to “tailgate” the Cod squad. Kelsey “Dropsy” Burder will be doing double duty. As mentioned in a previous edition he is serving as coach of the 35 plus group. Great to have the boys on board for what is shaping up to be another memorable Victorian Masters Baseball carnival.
Nothing like good banter
    It has been an entertaining month on the Cods Masters Baseball page with a couple of notable Cods heading south into to Tasmania Baseball territory to do some stirring and most importantly having a good time with a good friend of this column Chris “Chalky” Chalker. The draw from the masters has been released and it turns out that the Saturday could be very entertaining with Cods reacquainting themselves with their nemesis, Tassie, mid afternoon. At the moment Cods are up in the ledger but the Tassie men will be looking to turn the tables on them. If not, then one thing is sure that it will be settled somewhere else later.
Clarence and the E Street Band
    After a six month trip up the Hume in Albury, Wangaratta’s number one boy group have returned home. Nambrok are back in the city and are ready to stamp their mark back on the baseball club. There has been a change in personnel since last year with Brad “Undies” Murdoch giving up the band life, with Sam “Goggles” Grigg taking his place. More importantly they will be overseen by their boss “Clarence” Daniel Griffin. Look for good things from the E street band in 2018.
Season 2018
    The North Eastern Baseball Association is looking to begin the season after the Easter break. That would be the weekend of the 7th-8th of March. Once again Wangaratta will be entering two teams into the season, along side North Albury Bears, Benalla Bandits, Wodonga Warriors and Porepunkah Panthers. The draw is currently under construction and will be available on team app as soon as it is released. Dust the glove off, wind up the arm and the swing and head down to the Ranch for a throw and a hit in readiness for what will be another cracking season of North Eastern Baseball.
Coaching Capers
    It was great to hear that the Wangaratta Baseball Club committee got themselves organised with roles and responsibilities already way before the start of the season. So much so that coaches have already been locked in for season 2018. This year Wangaratta Rangers Orange will be under the care of “Groundskeeper” Micky Wyatt and Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo. Speaking of Mick’s grounds keeper role, he has already taken to it with gusto posting pictures on Facebook of his handy work. Meanwhile for Rangers Black, Nathan “FOMO Rubberarm” Pool is back in command with former “Iron Chef” Tetsu Kamiyama taking on the role of hitting specialist. Training is already in full swing (pardon the pun) with up to 15 Rangers and some special guests having a throw and a hit on Thursday nights on diamond two. So far the boys and girls are just slowly and steadily working their way into the season. Azza no more Prime Time has arrived!
    It has been noted down at training on Thursday nights that Aaron Parker needs a new nickname in relation to his rather new bright fielders glove. Now the glove needs to be seen to be believed but to go with his all out playing style and his ability to chase down baseballs that many of us older gentlemen just cannot get to, he will from this moment forward be known as Aaron “Prime Time” Parker. He is looking to take his game and name up into neon lights this year.
T-Ball Season update
    T-Ball is in full swing on a Wednesday night and the club are looking for more boys and girls to enjoy the great game of     T-ball. It is on every Wednesday night from 6pm till mid March. If any current player out there could head down and help out on the night it would be greatly appreciated by all involved.
Condolences
The Wangaratta Baseball/Softball Sports Club would like to pass on their condolences to the Lewis family on the passing of Kath. Also the club would like to pass on its thoughts to to the Martin family for the loss of their daughter Emma. Forever members of the Wangaratta baseball/softball sports club.

Rounding Third By Line Drive Grand Final Edition 2017

Hello and welcome to the grand final edition of Rounding Third. It has been a few weeks since Line Drive has run an eye over what has been happening down at the Ranch but boy what a few weeks it has been. The grand finals have been run and won. What a day of baseball was had by all. Three very competitive, high quality games of baseball were watched by a healthy crowd down at the Ranch over the weekend. From what this scribe witnessed and took part in, all enjoyed themselves very much. A big shout out goes to the volunteers at Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club who marked the diamonds, manned the kiosk, raked the diamonds and made sure everything ran smoothly for all during the day. A big thank you to the umpires who traveled up from Melbourne to officiate the games. We all hope you enjoyed your day. Now what else has been going on? Keep reading and maybe one of your favorites might be mentioned.
Sun Shined on the North Eastern baseball Association Finals day
     A beautiful North Eastern Victoria day greeted all the clubs for the finals of the 2017 North Eastern Baseball Association. The Rangers men and women had brought the ground up to look a treat and mother nature shined down on Targoora Park. In the early game, which helped kick the dew off the ground, Rangers Orange overcame a dogged Wodonga Warriors Maroon by a run. The final score was 8 to 7.   Brendon “Photograph” French took the honors of best on ground with a sterling performance on the mound and with the ball. Well done Frenchy. A special mention has to go out to first year manager Jamie the “Gaffer” Samuels. The Gaffer took on an enormous job of looking after and rotating through a squad of sixteen players. It is never easy being the boss and especially even more when you have changing availability from week to week. Congratulations and well done on all your efforts from all of us at Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club.

Porepunkah prove too strong for Bears Gold
     In game two of the day, Bears Gold took on Porepunkah Panthers. In a cracking start to the game Porepunkah took an early lead to get a run on the board in the top of the first. Bears Gold were up to the challenge and hit back scoring a couple of their own. A couple of short innings kept the game tight before the experienced Punkah line slowly began get on top. Banksy put on a clinic on the mound while hitting up a storm and punkah cult hero (well with the peanut gallery sitting on the first base line) Jimmy Hughes hit a long ball to consolidate the lead. In the end Porepunkah claimed the win by a score of 11 to 3. Congratulations to Porepunkah Panthers.
Bears Green get the job done over Wodonga Warriors White
     A good crowd stuck around to watch the North Eastern Baseball Association A grade final between Bears Green and Wodonga Warriors White at Targooora Park. Warriors White have certainly been the form team of the past month, pushing Rangers Black a few weeks back then turning the tables back on Black last week after a stellar performance on the mound by wily veteran Ash “Metal” Meyers. Bears Green sent Brendan “Boo” Simmons to the mound and from the start, he was in control. Simmons was doing it all. He gave Bears Green the early lead with a three run shot over right centre fence. Warriors fought back scoring a couple of runs themselves and the crowd were into an entertaining contest. Home runs to Mark Taylor and Steve Coonan helped stretch bears lead and with Simmons in complete control on the mound, the game was Bears Green with a score of 9-3. Simmons was awarded the MVP with a magnificent display on the mound and collected multiple hits to be the player with the most impact upon the game. In all, nine innings of baseball was played in just under two hours and seven runs came from the three home runs. The game was played in great spirit and many commented on the overall quality of the baseball played throughout the day. Congratulations to Bears Green.      It was a great initiative by the North Eastern baseball Association to resurrect the league presentation night. From all reports those who went certainly did enjoy themselves. More about that soon. Anyway Rangers own rubberarm Nathan “FOMO” Pool took out the A grade award MVP for the 2017 season. A big congratulations to Pooly! When there is a game that needed to be thrown or won, Pool pitched his heart out on the mound each and every time. Now it has to be mentioned that Pool and good mate Rob “Butts” Seymour certainly did enjoy themselves arriving home in the wee hours of Saturday morning. However Cab driver Tony “Spinner” Smith dobbed the boys in for leaving behind evidence of their trip home. This being the baseball caps and the trophy. Another fine for the trip away tin boys.
French and Jonker share the spoils.    
     A big pat on the back goes out to wily veterans of Rangers Orange Brendon “Photograph” French and Jason “Sunscreen” Jonker who shared the 2017 C grade Most Valuable Player award for the North Eastern Baseball Association. It has been a big year for French . Playing his 300th and also getting to share the diamond each weekend with with his son Damien “Rookie” French. Jonker has played every game once again and just loves to play each week. On behalf of Wangaratta Rangers congratulations on the 2017 season men.

     The Rangers Black season came to an end at the hand of a very good Wodonga Warriors on a wet Sunday at Springdale Heights. Coach Bryan “Moose” Wilson has lead the Rangers Black squad with skill and enthusiasm all year. He has challenged the boys and girls to get better and give it their all at training and on the diamond. His work with the juniors between games during the season does not go unnoticed. His loyalty and enthusiasm with other members of the association has been impressive. Great job on the season Moose.

     Finally it happened, Nathan “Fomo” Pool, Shaun “Flashback” O’Neil, Rob “Butts” Seymour and Cam “the Soak” Scott jagged a quaddie and boy they were chuffed! Lauren ‘Mrs Soak’ Scott also had input, choosing some nags along the way too. A nice little collect for the end of season kitty. Scott “Jenko” Jenkins was not so much pleased. When asked why was he not in on the quaddie The Soak replied “you were too busy playing a game on your phone”. Jenko just agreed with that. Mind you a ten per cent share of $1800 is not one to really be upset about missing.
Flashback does a phantom
     Sean “Flashback” O’Neil has been a revelation for this column this year. From his antics on the diamond and off it, Flashback has said many times to this scribe “Surely there is someone else to write about?” Well O’Neil you have just been a source of stories all year. This was again the case on Saturday. A few of the Rangers men and women decided to get together for a long lunch and a bit of punting. When it became time to change the scenery for dinner Flashback was all in for that. But was he? After he sent the rest of the party ahead he said he was just going to have a bit of a punt. He looked at his surroundings and did the old “phantom”. Trick is O’Neil knows multiple exits of where he was at and snuck out the door and home. Not a bad move really O’Neil. When questioned about it Sunday Flashback just lamented… “I wasted money on that Kebab” Enough said Flashback. Enough Said.
Nambrok is no more. 
    As the headline suggests Nambrok is no more. Remaining Band mates Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore and Kelsey “Dropsy” Burder have left Nambrok and reunited with their previous band mate Brad “Undies” Murdoch just north of the border in Albury. Dropsy assures this writer that this is only a temporary move and told all his avid fans out there to not stress too much as they will soon be back in Wangaratta. In the mean time check out Burders new wheels. He says they can go real fast. Always stylish Dropsy.
 
Get back on the bike Tetsu
     Iron Chef Tetsu Kamiyama did not quite live up to the name over the past week. Last Sunday he turned up sporting a rather black eye. Jason “Sunscreen” Jonker and Cam “The Soak” Scott asked Tets how did this black eye occur? Here is Tetsu’s long story. “Monday ride home fell off. Left bike and walked home”. Big black eye from the fall. On Tuesday Tetsu decided to go get his bike. It was not there. Lucky for him it had been handed into the local Police station where the owner was reunited with his bike.

Griff and the tin
     Well the tin has been opened. Daniel “The Griff” Griffin let those who are looking to go on the end of season Ranger Ramble VI Bendigo Version 3.0 edition that the accounts are looking rather healthy. He has not told anyone what the final figure is, but if anyone who has been in possession of the tin at any point late in the season will know that it was rather heavy. Maybe for a final bit of a raffle  all could have a guess on how much is in the tin and receive a prize for the correct guess. Like a free lunch on the tins behalf? Anyway all will be revealed in how much is in the tin on October 20th 2017.
Happy travellers
     There has been a great many of players who have come from near and far to represent Wangaratta this season. Each week the Hume crew of Leah and Lauren Dinsdale, Daniel Griffin, Robyn “RPG” Percy Goulding come up from Melbourne most weeks. Not to  mention the Red runners Aaron “Azza” Parker and Tetsu Kamiyayma. Jason Jonker drives the southbound each week and don’t forget Cam “the Soak” Scott who leaves Yarrawonga for a feed and laugh in Wangaratta. As mentioned in a previous edition many travel to play for the club and they keep coming back. Hope to see you all again next year in the Orange and Black of Wangaratta Baseball Club.
Softball looks to return (from a previous edition but still very important)
     While having a chat to Kevin “The Legend” Pool he was saying that there has been some interest in getting softball going again over the summer time. It has been some time since softball has graced the diamonds of Targoora Park and now is the time to change all that, and look for expressions of interest in playing once again. It would fantastic if there are like minded readers of Rounding Third who are interested in playing Softball in the Albury Softball Association. CODS update
     Is it safe to talk about this now? Yes of course it is. CODS masters baseball will be back in March 2017. Already many have been canvassing the idea of having two teams. Hello and welcome to this weeks massive edition of Rounding Third. It has been a couple of weeks since the last edition, so we will let you know how the Boys and Girls in Orange and Black have gone.
      A sunny Saturday was on hand over the weekend and Wodonga Warriors were welcomed to the Ranch. The early game was a cracking one with Warriors White serving it up to the Rangers Black in a preview for the preliminary final in two weeks. It went down to the wire with Rangers Black prevailing in a walk off victory 6-4. The late game was also hotly contested with Warriors Maroon taking the win by a run 8-7. Then the fun started. But more about that later in this big edition of Rounding Third. Let’s get to it.
It has happened. Spaniard meets the new Gus
     After weeks of speculation and not seeing Angus “Spaniard” Young and Alex “Gus” Gouveia in the same location (being the same person) both came face to face a couple of weeks back.. Let’s set the scene. Warm up was on and Spaniard took off with the rest of his Ranger brothers while Alex was still getting organised. Eventually Alex made it round to where the team was stretching. The rest of the squad could not believe what they were seeing. Two Gus’s!!!. Alex remarked there was no similarities while real Gus did point out “there are SOME similarities in the way we look”. This put many in the circle into fits of laughter with Alex still disputing that they look nothing alike. Gus played the first couple of innings for Black and was then replaced ironically by Alex in the lineup. For the record, Alex had a hit as did Gus. Alex likes to pitch as does Gus. Coincidence? I think not.
O’Neil has a Flashback!
     A few weeks ago at Benalla, Shaun “Flashback” O’Neil had a day to forget (see June 14th edition) However Sunday was the day where Flashback was to set the record straight. It could be said he had leather poisoning with his glove. But his fielding glove is not leather. So let’s call it synthetic leather poisoning. He was in everything. A touch here a touch there. Another one and even a double play. it must be said that the quick hands of Cam “The Soak” Scott helped him out with that one. O’Neil still disagrees. He did it in the field and did it all in the batting box too. His highlight? A towering shot just over the center field fence. Flashback played it up for his adoring family and the Ranger faithful gathered to watch his exploits. Flashback got what he so desired, the glass for Best on Ground. Flashback was keen to replicate his efforts from the previous week against Warriors white and while he was solid he could not quite get the glass again. He might need to invest in a better padded glove as he took a full force of a line drive at second. Lucky for him hit the right part of the glove. He may as well caught it bare handed. Maybe next week Flashback .
Lucky Ticket has been run and won
     The social event of the year has been run and won. Wangaratta Rangers Lucky Ticket had about ninety in attendance and all who were there had a cracking good time. Roast beef rolls went down a treat while all kept warm around the fires. The committee and members of the Rangers all pitched in and the draw ran like clockwork. So who won? The winner of the lucky ticket draw was the leader of men, the Pres Tony “Spinner” Smith. It was a popular win as Spinner puts in countless hours down at the club organising cleaning cooking playing and getting others to help out at the club. Spin was a bit shocked to win the draw but this writer thinks he is definitely a well deserved winner. Congratulations Spin. Enjoy!
Great day for baseball
     Two great games were played down at the Ranch over the past weekend. In the early game Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool pitched  with guile to keep the Rangers in the game while for Warriors White Fraser Chadwick threw a great game. It was neck and neck  with Warriors getting the jump with Ragers triking back with then Warriors to stretch their advantage again. Late in the game Wodonga had a chance to put a break on Rangers but were unable to capitalise on loaded bases with no one out. Rangers had one last chance to win it and with runners in scoring position Tetsu “Iron Chef” Kamiyama drove in the winning runs. A bigh quality, intense game of ball played hard, fair and played to win.
Warriors Represent
     Some of the Warriors stayed on for the Lucky ticket draw and enjoyed the hospitality of the Wangaratta Rangers. Golden Pufferfish, Ash Meyers lead the charge as usual ably supported by the golden tonsils of Chris “Enrique” Jones whose rendition of Hero was one to behold. Later on Enrique changed gears and asked for some Paul Simon “You can call me Al”. Enrique felt the music as did Michael “Bill” Clear who got some moves in on the dance floor. Maybe next year a Karaoke night hosted by Enrique and Bill could be organised. Thoughts anyone?
Call of the week
     Call of the week has to go to Whacko Jacko Wright who said he could “teach” Tetsu “Iron Chef” Kamiyama how to hit. Wow setting the bar hight there Jackson. Wonder if this week there may be a hitting competition between these two? If you rang a bookmaker to forma a market on that one you would be howled down in laughter. My odds Tetsu to win that one at $1.01. Jackson would be probably $201 to win. Sorry Jackson no chance against the little master.
Murdoch returns
     Legendary member of “Nambrok” Brad “Undies” Murdoch returned to the diamond over the past weekend. Undies has had a few commitments during this season but he suited up and played his role with fellow band members Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore, Kelsey “Dropsys” Burder and Dan “Griff” Griffin. Murdoch was good on the field but it is when the sky turns dark is where Murdoch and Nambrok excel. If you ever want to see a great impersonation of some Peter Garrett dancing just check out Murdoch. he has the mannerisms and moves down pat. Each time he busts it out it is just as good as the last. For the record the rendition of Creep by Nambrok was impressive as past years. Good times.

Robbo and lefty impress on the bump 
     A positive to take out of Ragers Orange match against Bears Green a couple of weeks back was Andrew “Robbo” Robinsons continual development as a pitcher. In his two innings he threw with control, and with time will develop his understanding of the game. Simon “Lefty” O’Neil put in a couple of solid innings of work too. Two guys who have been away from the game for a long time but are getting better each and every week. Keep working hard at training gentlemen.
Chef Samuels is in the kitchen
Chef Butts aka Rob Seymour is having a break this week. After Buttchos and Kranskys the past two weeks, Chef Jamie “The Gaffer” Samuels is taking over. Pulled pork and coleslaw rolls is on the menu this week. Look for the post on the Rangers Facebook page and then vote if you want some or not. Training numbers have been great. Tune up for Orange vs Black this week by training hard and having a good feed.

     The final round of the regular season will see Ranngers Orange play Rangers Black this Sunday. Many players will be looking to fine tune their skills before the finals kick off next weekend. Softball looks to return
     While having a chat to Kevin “The Legend” Pool he was saying that there has been some interest in getting softball going again over the summer time. It has been some time since softball has graced the diamonds of Targoora Park and now is the time to change all that, and look for expressions of interest in playing once again. It would fantastic if there are like minded readers of Rounding Third who are interested in playing Softball in the Albury Softball Association. Special shout out to Tabaret
     Clinton “Tabaret” Williams played his 350th game for his beloved Hawks Baseball Club up in Mildura over the weekend. Thanks to Grant “G” Tilley for the snippet.  “Infact, it was just about all about Willy. He pitched his 7th complete game, he gave up his 250th walk and he claimed his 200th strikeout”. A great bloke and a damn good ball player over the years. Great job #5.

Rounding Third by Line Drive July 11th 2017

Hello and welcome to this weeks issue of Rounding Third. The boys and girls who pull on the black and orange of Wangaratta had the week off. The Victorian U16’s Winter Baseball Championships were played down at Tagoora Park over the past weekend. It was taken out by The Dandenong Baseball Association, who went through the whole weekend undefeated. Congratulations to the DBA. There were plenty of specators down at the Ranch judging by the number of cars in the car park over the two days. Only three rounds to go before finals. More about that later. Now on to other news.

Orange turn the corner. Black get the job done

     It has been talked about over the past few weeks that Rangers Orange have been slowly and steadily building into the season. This was definitely the case in the last round up at Porepunkah where, the Rangers boys and girls came from behind to run over Benalla 14-11. Gaffer Jamie Samuels was chuffed with her chargers. Best for the game in the field were “Whacko Jacko” Wright, Simon “Lefty” O’Neil and “The Game” Jason Jonker. Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo hit the ball hard and to all parts of the field while young gun Damien “Rookie” French got the glass for the day. In the late game, Rangers Black finally overcame a stubborn and always competitive Porepunkah eventually running out winners 9-2. From all reports it was a close tight tussle up into the later innings, where finally the Ranger offense led by Bryan “Moose” Wilson moonshot the break on their opposition. Great job ladies and gentlemen.

Winter Wonders

     It had not rained in over six weeks but those in the know had a feeling in their achy bones that the rain might come as the North Eastern baseball Association was holding the U16’s State Winter Championships. However there was going to be no repeat of last years deluge.  A bit of rain dampened the ground Saturday morning but did not play much part for the rest of the weekend. This would have come as much relief to all the volunteers from all clubs who put in the hours in the Canteen, the Barbeque and on ground duties. A big thank you to all who came down helped out and made the weekend a successful one. AS they say many hands make light work.

Damien French Gun for hire

     The Rookie took some red hot form from Porepunkah the previous week into the Winter Championship weekend. He was drafted in to play for the Sunraysia Baseball league under sixteens outfit. From reading the reports on the Sunraysia page, Damo had a weekend out. Plenty of hits and pitched an inning or two. Great job Damo. Here’s to continuing that red hot form into the final three games of the season. Big thanks to Sunraysia for giving Damo the opportunity to play over the weekend.

Spinner Summons the Troops

     President Tony “Spinner” Smith was at the forefront of the effort to get members of the Rangers to come along and help out on the weekend. All his huffing and puffing was worth it. It was great to see a whole host of names who volunteered their time to help the carnival run as smoothly as possible. It just proves that when everyone does a little bit over the course of the season, everything can run much more smoothly. Great job Spinner.

DJ won’t be playing the decks for a while

     Resident Wangaratta Rangers DJ Sarah Iwanuch had a bit of a slip up last week. It ;looks like she made a right mess of her hand by accident. Judging from the photos there was plenty of claret spilt and a good lot of bandages on her hand. Sarah assures us all that it was just a little slip up and she will be back down the Ranch very soon. That is a thumbs up from all of us at Wangaratta.

Lucky Ticket. Two weeks

     The Rangers one and only Lucky Ticket night is almost here. For $25 you get a chance to win some cash and have a rocking good time with all your favorite Ranger players down at the Ranch. Tickets are selling fast so if you do not have one, drop the club a line and we will try and accommodate you with one.

Three weeks to go

     Yes three weeks is all that is left in the 2017 season before finals. Where has that gone? This week the Rangers tackle the Bears. On July 22nd a rare Saturday game is being played between Wangaratta and Wodonga Warriors. For the final week Rangers Orange will play Rangers Black for bragging rights. Make sure you come down to training have some fun and play some baseball.

Ranger Ramble VI update

     Legendary tour operator Daniel Griffin informs Line Drive that Ranger Ramble VI numbers are at an all time high. Once again all the usual suspect will be in attendance but some rookies are looking to put their stamp on a Ranger tour. As mentioned before a few will be making their debut. More information in the coming weeks in regards to Ranger Ramble VI 2017.

The power of positivity.

     Line Drive has been thinking over the past few weeks about life, baseball, and of course Wangaratta Rangers. When you stand back and really think about it, we really do have a great club. When there is something that needs to be done. It gets done. When volunteers are required to help run an event. Volunteers put their hand up. No matter what the task is, there is always someone to lend a hand. At times things are tough. We get cranky, frustrated, disenchanted but then you realize  why would players drive over one hundred kilometers a week to attend training and to play on the weekend? As a player said to this scribe recently about the travel, “I just love playing.” It can be as simple as that. The positive forward momentum the club has made in the past few years, we should be proud of. We support one another, we go on end of year trips, we help out when we are needed. Thursday night dinners are definitely something each player who goes to training looks forward to. There are always bumps and kinks in the road but if we continue to support one another and help out the club in our own unique ways, then Wangaratta Rangers will be the club that we all want it to be. Supportive, Positive and most importantly having fun playing Baseball.

Rounding Third by Line Drive June 27th 2017

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. The weekend saw your Rangers guys and girls head up the Hume to Albury to take on perennial powerhouse NASC Bears. In the early game, the rapidly improving Rangers Orange got off to a slow start against Bears Gold. However the damage was already done with Bears running out 15-5 victors. In the late game, a vastly different Rangers Black looked to turn the tables on Bears Green. It was a very high quality game of baseball with some newer Rangers getting some good swings in, against a very good Bears pitcher. In the end Rangers Black could not make any inroads and lost by the score of 10-2. Credit to the Bears who tacked on runs here and there throughout the game. A big thanks to all traveling supporters of both clubs who braved some very indifferent baseball conditions. Your support every week is greatly appreciated by all who take the diamond. Now last weeks edition was epic, what has been happening in the past seven days?
A night out with the Rangers
     Jamie “The Gaffer” Samuels got to experience what it is like to head out with some of the Ranger boys on Friday night. She thought it was a good idea to partake in a social night with them via the Wangaratta Soccer Club. Early on she witnessed Tetsu “The Pest” Kamiyama in full flight and Rob “Butts” Seymour just having a good night. One thing to know Jamie is  when you see a way out you take it. Ask Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo how to do it.  Jamie had not learned that yet and witnessed all sorts of shenanigans. Let’s just say it ended with “The Pest” getting lost. Once again for those who know, it was just another standard night out with the Wangaratta Rangers.
Dropsy does it again.
     Kelsey “Dropsy” Burder had a cracker of a game down at Benalla last weekend. Looking back at the score book and stats sheet, Kelsey went five for five with all his other stats through the roof. Could he continue his hot streak this week against Bears Gold? Sadly not a chance. He lost all coordination behind the plate and could not even throw the ball back to the pitcher. If Shaun “Old School” O’Neil was there he would have been well pleased that the heat was off him for the week. Kelsey did admit to Line Drive spies that he owed a bit to the tin this week. Things improved for him as the day wore on and by the end Dropsy was gone and Kelsey was back. On a side note whatever Burder is doing with his swing he should keep doing it. Come have a look. Burder is burning it up.
Dinsdales know how to hit
     The apple does not fall far from the tree when it comes to Leah and Lauren Dinsdale. Both this year have shown the same approach to hitting as their father Ian “Dino” Dinsdale. “See ball hit ball.” Looking through the books, both put the ball in play regularly and are tough outs at the plate. This was definitely the case versus Bears Gold. Dinsdale gets on base with, Dinsdale driving in the run. Good work team Dinsdale.
The winter is here
     The past weekend saw a few changes to each team from the Thursday to the Sunday. Both Jamie “The Gaffer” Samuels and Bryan “Moose” Wilson dealt with the situation admirably. It just seemed to be a perfect storm. In the end our ‘we never forfeit’ attitude came to the fore with Kelsey Burder backing up in the second game as well as Simon “Lefty” O’Neil and “The Game” Jason Jonker. Brad “Undies” Murdoch stuck around all day too just in case something went wrong. Special mention to Kevin “The Legend” Pool who scored both games in some very cool conditions. To all injured out there look after yourselves we hope you get better soon.
Rangers Lucky Ticket is back
     That’s right on Saturday July 22 will see the annual Rangers Lucky Ticket night. Once again MC’s Cam “The Soak” Scott and
Scott “The Beard” Jenkins will be your hosts for the draw. Tickets are again $25, so see a club member for a ticket. Baseball brothers in arms, Wodonga Warriors, are keen for a cracking night with their Ranger brethren, and have purchased a book of tickets.  Baseball will be played on Saturday the 21st July against Wodonga before the draw so come along and have a look at some Saturday baseball. Look out for “The Golden Pufferfish” Ash Meyers to have a great day both on and off the field.
Ranger ramble is filling up
     Event Organiser Dan “The Griff” Griffin informs Line Drive that places on this years Ranger Ramble to Bendigo are rapidly filling up. Already Griff can confirm he has thirteen travellers for the sixth installment of this annual event. To those who are keen to go, better get paying and talk to Griff. One thing we know is that it will be a corker of a trip like the other five. This year’s theme is beach party. So get out your best Hawaiian shirts for a rocking fun weekend in October.
Victorian Winter Baseball Champs is almost here
     On July 8th and 9th the North Eastern Baseball Association will be hosting the Under 16’s winter championships at Targoora Park. This is a call out to all Rangers who are around on the weekend to pitch in and help out with a slot on Saturday or Sunday morning. This coming Saturday, President Tony “Spinner” Smith needs some help getting the ground up to usual high standard. So please spare and hour here or there and help out. Many hands make light work. A hour here or there means a lot to many. If all clubs could work together and help out then that would be awesome. Wear your work boots and be there at 9am.
Thursday Night Training
     This Thursday, a meal has yet to be decided upon but no matter. Look to get down to “The Ranch” and have a laugh, work on your skills and train hard for an hour. If you have a drill or something you wish to implement speak up. The more input the better. No request about a skill of baseball will be refused. Short sharp train hard and have fun. DJ Sarah will be in attendance once again. Let’s work on the positives and get around one another and enjoy this great game of baseball.
