Rounding Third by Line Drive August 1st 2016

Hello and welcome once again, to a cold winters edition of Rounding Third. It has been a rather wet and damp week here in North East Victoria. This has played havoc with the scheduling of games where three out of the five venues where baseball is played, have been unplayable.
Finally, after much deliberation, Benalla Bandits were able to hold two games a couple of weeks ago. In the early game, Wangaratta Rangers Black scored a convincing win over Wodonga Warriors White. Special mention to players who filled in for Warriors White and helped them field nine for the game.
While in the late game, from all reports, was a cracker. Benalla Bandits came out winners over a dogged Rangers Orange outfit by three runs. A huge thankyou goes out to those who came, played, umpired, scored and ran the canteen at Benalla.
     Over the past weekend, three out of the four games were able to get up and running. The Rangers Black men tackled a red hot Bears Green who proved too strong for Rangers, while in the late game the Rangers Orange boys got a positive result over a brave Porepunkah Panthers 9-7. Only one week before the finals begin and the Rangers men look to get themselves right for the finals. Hopefully there will be some sunshine in the North East to help dry the already sodden ground, but hey that is winter baseball isn’t it?

Rain Rain go away
     More rain during the week has not helped the boys and girls down at Targoora Park. It has been almost five weeks since the boys have been able to train on their own diamond as the ground is just waterlogged. Ranger identity, Rob “I am never angry” Seymour, says he has never seen the diamond this wet. Many others around the club are scratching their heads to remember when they last saw diamond one being the muddy soggy mess it is. The problem is that the club have not been on it, but at the same time, it has not improved. Fingers crossed we get some sunny days in the weeks ahead to help dry the ground out a bit. This will be a topic of much discussion in the weeks to come.
The Burgers are better at the Benalla Canteen
     A very big thank you needs to be extended to the Benalla Bandits Baseball Club who helped out by hosting two games over the past weekend. One other point of difference is the BBQ canteen and fire pit. The fire took a bit to get going last Sunday but it was nice and toasty for the finish to the Rangers Black vs Warriors White match. Even better was the array of good food to eat at the Canteen. Someone asked Mick “The Skipper” Wyatt a question while in the middle of a burger. He could not answer as the burger was in his words “soooo good”. This was backed up by Bryan “Moose” Wilson and others. Next time if you go to baseball in Benalla grab a snag and a burger from them. It is worth it.
 
Bradburn has a day out in Benalla
     Young hard swinging lefty Jack Bradburn had a day out versus Benalla a fortnight ago. From all reprots Jack hit the ball hard and was cool calm and collected on the diamond. Great job Jack, we hope the hot form continued over the past weekend at Porepunkah.

Spirit is the key
     One thing the Rangers boys pride themselves is team spirit. This was clearly evident over the weekend where Dan “Always in the Paper” McCullough put his hand up to help out Benalla. He took a few catches, got a few hits and qualified for the trip as well. Much must be said about the rest of the boys availability week in week to don the orange and black in rather adverse conditions. A big mention needs to go to those who come watch us each week in whatever the conditions throw at them. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Trip away get excited.
     I seem to talk about this every week but it’s getting closer. Master of trip Daniel “The Griff” Griffin has installed a “2IC” for the trip. His name is Cam “The Soak” Scott. So excited is Soak that he and Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo are going a day early to scope out the place, and work out the “lay of the land” of RAdelaide. It has been a few years since Soak has been there but the boys will be looking forward to watching the footy and some baseball, over the South Australian public holiday long weekend.
Tin is found!
The Ranger fine tin has been a hot topic of conversation over the past few weeks. Many Ranger faithful have racked up a decent amount of IOU’s for the tin, however no one has been able to locate it. Finally the club got a lead. It happened to be hidden in such a safe place that even Rob “Butts” Seymour could not remember till now. So now is the time to pay up and have some fun.
Silver Circle Lucky Ticket is one week away!!!
If you have not already got a ticket to the one and only Rangers Lucky Ticket draw, make sure you do. Hosts Cam Scott and Scott Jenkins have discussed their outfits for this year, and going on last years, this event is shaping up to be a cracker. Tickets are $25 and can still be bought from members of the club.Word is Angus Young will be in attendance. It will be great to see him and everyone who comes out to “The Ranch” for a great night. For those who read this and have tickets please get them back to Scotty Jenkins this week.
 
Lolly Lolly gonna get me some red frogs
     One real bonus each week in the Rangers dugout, is the selection of lollies on offer to the members of the team to keep their energy up. Di Parker certainly selects the best lolly mix each week. By the end of the game there is never manyleft. She has yet to tell us what brand the lollies are. My tip, The Natural Confectionary company. Thanks Di.
 
Bunnings BBQ 
     The Wangaratta Rangers baseball Club has secured a Saturday at Bunnings Wangaratta. The Pres Tony “Spinner” Smith has been busily hustling up the numbers to man the BBQ. Welcome back The Jet Set
     Welcome back from overseas to Travis “Iceman” Frost and Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool. Both have returned with an array of different caps and plenty of great tales to tell. From following online, it looks like they all had a great time. Now they have come back for the nitty gritty end of the season, and to help the Rangers Black quest for back to back flags.
 
Wednesday night tea
     Good friend of Line Drive, Cam “The Soak” Scott will be back in the kitchen this week. On the menu, Bangers and Mash with corn on the cob and gravy! Come down on Wednesday night for a chat, a feed and a laugh. Mick already says he wants Spins food.

Rounding Third by Line Drive July 18 2016

Hello and welcome to another edition of Rounding Third. Once again, weather has played havoc with the scheduling of games and grounds in the North Eastern Baseball Association. The last couple of weeks, Targoora park has just been too wet to play any games on. However the weather gods smiled on the the ladies and gentlemen of the North East this past weekend,  with glorious sunny conditions greeting the teams on their visit to Gayview park in Wodonga. In the early game, The Orange men took on Wodonga Warriors White. Behind a stellar performance on the mound by Jason Jonker, The Orange boys could not get over the line. While in the late game, The Rangers Black squad got the job done over Warriors Maroon by twelve runs. Next week, Rangers Black travel to Springdale Heights to take on Warriors white while Rangers Orange head the other way to tackle Benalla Bandits. It has been a couple of weeks since the last line drive, so what else is news? Continue reading and you will find out.
Man of Action
     With the weather being so ordinary over the past couple of weeks, it has been great to see many members of the North Eastern Baseball community band together to try and get games played and grounds up to scratch. This was clearly evident over the Winter Under sixteens championships a couple of weeks back, where the clubs banded together and managed to get the job done under such adverse conditions. This sense of community has continued, with Wodonga allowing us to transfer our home games from the weekend to their ground, as sadly, ours is still not up to scratch due to the amount of moisture in the turf.. However it was not as simple as just moving the games to Wodonga. Much correspondence was had between Tony “Spinner” Smith and  Michael “Bill” Clear, the vice president from Wodonga. From the Wodonga end, Bill has done a power of work and communication with Wangaratta. He was even down there on Saturday mopping up water and making sure the ground was in a safe and playable condition. Throughout the whole process, Bill has let everyone know what is happening and how it is all going. He has taken it upon himself to help keep everyone in the loop about games, teams and player availability. It is such a big effort to keep a club running and individuals like Bill help clubs run smoothly. Just remember to do your little bit for your club. It does not matter how small it is, every little bit helps.

Pokemon Go craze is here
     The boys of Wangaratta Rangers are not immune to the Pokemon go craze. While playing at Wodonga over the weekend, The Nambrok boys were catching them all and defending their gyms while tackling the game against Warriors in front of them. At one point Kyle “Doug” Gilmore was rapt that there was a Pokemon left behind to defend their ‘gym’. He even remarked that Wangaratta’s Pokemon game was stronger than Wodonga. After the game was done, trip organiser and all round good guy, Daniel “The Griffin” took flight looking around for more Pokemon. Last time he was seen, he was stopping in multiple locations attempting to catch them all. More updates to following in the coming weeks on how they attempt to be Pokemon Grand Masters.
Payback
     Mick, “The Skipper” Wyatt, got a little taste of his own medicine over the weekend. The Skipper plate umpired the first game of the day and called a third strike on Tony, “Spinner” Smith. In the second game the roles were reversed. Spinner called a third strike on Skipper. The boys in the dugout thought it was an even up for an earlier decision. When asked if this was the case Mick just replied with a low voiced “yep”. This sent the dugout into hysterics. Very humble pie there Mick.
 
Routine Routine all in the Routine
     Cam, “The Soak” Scott, is a man of routine on game days. From getting organised in the morning to making sure he stops in Rutherglen when playing in Albury Wodonga, he is a man of routine. However, The Soak had a change over the weekend with rather poor results. It’s safe to say some were surprised with Cam’s reaction to his poor day. But that’s sport and all deal with a run of bad luck differently. Still, by the end of the game he was able to have a laugh about it. There is always next week Cam.
Silver Circle Lucky Ticket is fast approaching
     If you have not already got a ticket to the one and only Rangers Lucky Ticket draw, make sure you do. Tickets are $25 and can be bought from members of the club. If you do want one, just drop into Londrigan Meats in the Wangaratta Plaza, they have a book for sale on the counter. Date is Saturday 6th August, 6pm at “The Ranch”.
Ranger Ramble 2016.
     Venue is Adelaide. Flights are booked. Final piece of the puzzle has been completed. Accommodation is organised. Now, all that needs to happen is the punters club getting some wins so we  can fund a bit more of the trip. Jet setters Nathan Pool and Travis Frost are already dreaming of a big return for the group in Las Vegas. They have talked about it so let’s hope they back it up. Trip is from Friday 30th September to Monday 3rd of October. Remember, four games to qualify or other monetary compensation is required.
Where is the tin?
     Talking of monetary requirements…anyone seen the tin? There are a few of the Ranger faithful who may owe a little bit of coin from over the past few weeks. The club may not have played much but still the penalties tick over. If you do something silly (there are plenty of us out there) then make sure you pay your dues.
Tip your hat to Butts
     Rob “Butts” Seymour is a man of many hats. He has worked very hard over the past few months perfecting the new look of the Wangaratta Rangers playing caps along with the North Eastern Baseball Association representative side. Finally, he has put it all together and there are some ripping playing caps getting around. If you want one see Butts at training or on game day. He will let you know the price.
Well done Damo French
     Young Ranger Damian French represented the Bendigo side at the under fourteens representative carnival held over the previous weekend in Melbourne. From the looks of things Damo held his own playing a variety of roles for his adopted side. He had a great weekend capped off with Most Valuable Player honours for Bendigo. Great job Damo.
Three weeks to go
     Only three weeks left in the North Eastern Baseball Association season. Get down and get around the club for the run into the August finals. It would be great to see as many faces as possible down at The Ranch before the end of the season. Drop in for a chat, a throw or even dinner. All are welcome at Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club.

Rounding Third By Line Drive June 27th 2016

Hello and welcome again to another edition of North Eastern baseball’s one and only look into the people and personalities of the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. Over the weekend both teams were in action at Springdale Heights in Lavington. Wangaratta Rangers Black too on Porepunkah Panthers in the early game. The boys got the job done by the score of 13-6. While in the late game the Wangaratta Rangers Orange crew proved no match to a well drilled Bears Green. They were gallant in defeat by the score of 10-0. Thanks goes to those who umpired, did the scoring and went along to support the lads. This coming weekend there is a general bye as The Victorian State Winter U/16’s Baseball Championships are being held in Wangaratta. So if you want your baseball fix come along and have a look at that!. What else is news this week……
 
Soaks Kitchen Report.
     Last Wednesday it was great to see fourteen of the Ranger faithful turn up for Soaks Kitchen of Pulled Chicken, coleslaw and chips. It was well received by the punters that The Soak Cam Scott did not have any to take home! He did however save a bit for Mrs Soak Lauren Grenfell who was very grateful for it for her dinner. So now who’s turn is it to put on the spread Wednesday night?
 
Silver Circle Lucky Tickets
     Once again Silver Circle Lucky tickets are available from members of the club for the August 6th extravaganza! Tickets are selling fast so contact who you know in the club to get yours as soon as possible. This is our main fundraiser for the year so be great for all of you tom come along and have a good night at The Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. If you are keeping score of most ticket seller Bryan “Moose”Wilson is leading that stat.
 
Under Sixteens Rep is here in Wangaratta July 2 and 3
     Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club is again hosting the Victorian State Winter U/16’s Baseball Championships over July 2 and 3. Once again like all the other clubs in the competition we have some roles and duties to fulfill. “The Pres”Tony Smith has been a busy bee with others getting the place looking great for the upcoming weekend. Now it is up to the rest of us to give him a hand over the two days. Come down, spend some time around the club, help out the association. The more club members available will make it all run smoothly once again. Nothing better than spending time with you baseball brothers and sisters. Fingers crossed the weather stays dry and clear for a few days to give the grounds a bit more of a chance to look even better. For those reading this from afar and coming to Wangaratta we hope you enjoy your weekend in the North East.
Mystery of Lucky ticket solved.
     Last week a tale was told about a mystery person winning a lucky draw. Now more information came to light in the week where it was a person sitting right beside Mick “Skipper”Wyatt after the game in Wodonga. This person did not say anything while Mick was telling the tale of the mystery winner. The only way he spilt the beans was in a phrase to Lauren Grenfell. “Well that pays for the trip”. When questioned on this the cheeky one also said ït’s for the trip too”. Well played number 12…Well played!
 
We’re all going on a summer holiday!
     Well not all of us but a few are lucky enough to pack their bags and head overseas for a week or two. Some are getting to watch some Baseball in their travels. Others are going to be sampling some of the best stuff Asia has to offer. Safe travels to those venturing off for a few weeks. This scribe is pretty sure there will be plenty of updates across all social media platforms to make the rest of us jealous about.
Punters Club update
     In a sentence….going along……yeah let’s just say going along. Come on gentlemen! We need a bit of spark in this department. Otherwise a small dividend will be available in the end. The more banter there is the better we go. Be brave put your hand up to have a crack and lets see if it can be turned around.
Batting cage Wednesday night
     Get down to the Ranch this Wednesday night for some much needed hitting practice in the cage. A meal will be on offer as per the usual Wednesday night so let Chef Spin know if you wish to partake in some awesome food. Get down and get around the club ladies and gents. It’s going to be a big couple of weeks!

Rounding Third By Line Drive June 20th 2016

Now it has been a few weeks, but hello again to all you avid readers about the goings on of the persons, who make up the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. After a three week break, baseball returned to the diamonds of the North East over this past weekend. It was a mixed day for the boys who donned the orange and black over the weekend. Rangers Orange had their chances, but were unable to get over the Benalla Bandits losing a close one 12-11, while up in Wodonga at Gayview Park, Rangers Black ground out a 4-2 victory over Wodonga Warriors White. Thanks to all the boys who put their hand up to play and thanks to the scorers and line umpires throughout the league who were able to help out as well. Now what else has been news since our last correspondence? Keep reading and you will find out!
Winter Championships capped off for another year
     I don’t even know if that makes sense!! But a great job to all those who put their hand up and went down to Geelong to represent the North Eastern Baseball Association this year. The boys had a mixed weekend, but still played hard the entire time. Word is they looked resplendent in their new North East royal blue caps. Once again this was achieved through the associations number one hat master, Rob “Butts” Seymour. If you want a baseball cap and want quality, go see Rob. He will be able to hook you up with a great deal.
 
Mick is definitely the Captain of the ship
     The Skipper Mick Wyatt is certainly leading from the front. In a tough pitchers duel vs Wodonga Warriors White, the Rangers needed to grind out a run. Mick did everything in his powers, and for his grunting and false starting the team got that run. He was also very sharp at first base and in all had a very good game. When Mick is up and about the team is up and about. Great job skipper.
Cowan deals and the the field wheels!
     Welcome back Dylan, “Dead Eye” Cowan, who returned to the Rangers lineup after a bit of time away holidaying all over this great land of Australia. Dylan returned to the mound and had great control of his pitches throwing six strong innings. The infield behind him did not let Cowan down, turning double plays and making an assortment off balance throws to first base. Nathan, “Rubberarm” Pool, then worked three innings of scoreless balls to finish the game. To cap off his fine performance, Cowan hit the ball with power and took on the catchers arm and won. Well done Dylan on a great game.
Who won a lucky ticket?
     Bit of discussion after the game in Wodonga on Sunday night and the Rangers lads were talking about the upcoming Rangers function in August. The attention then turned to other draws and other matters. The Skipper Mick Wyatt had it on good authority, that a member of the club was in partnership with the winning syndicate of the particular draw. No names will be mentioned here till confirmation but Skip was sure it a hard hitting right hand batter who got the chocolates. Sounds familiar does it Mick? Didn’t you win a boat and keep that quiet? Or did you just hang up on the bloke trying to tell you three times!
Under Sixteens Carnival July 2nd and 3rd
     Once again the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club will be the host venue of the 2016 State Under Sixteens Winter Championship. This is a big weekend for not only the club but for the North Eastern Baseball Association. The Association are busily drawing up rosters for all clubs to help do their part and help make sure the weekend runs smoothly. The Pres Tony “Spinner” Smith has been busy rallying the troops to present “The Ranch” in tip top shape. Now he needs our help too. We are all one and part of the club. We all need to do a little bit. Whatever you can do let us know and give us a hand when you get a chance. It does not have to be on the weekend, maybe on a Wednesday night, just ask what needs to be done and it’s once less thing to worry about. As the song says, “From little things Big things grow!” From those across the association who read this get in and help your clubs! Does not matter how small it is. It is always appreciated by the hard working committees.
 
Dinner Wednesday night.
     This Wednesday at training Cam “The Soak” Scott will be in charge of dinner proceedings. He has already got an idea of what he would like to serve up but he needs you the punters and the good members of the club to come down and sample his food. Please let the Soak know of your dietary requirements and get around the club. It may be dark wet and dreary, but come down get involved and have a feed and play some card games!
Ranger Ramble 2016. Flights are booked
     Man of the Tin Dan “The Griff” Griffin has booked the flights for this years Ranger Ramble 2016. Adelaide Edition. Now those who are going need to fix up The Griff for the flights. Accommodation is to follow later. The other pressing matter is that for you to qualify for the trip (unless get special permission from the trip committee) is four games for the season. Ball magnet Rob “Beaker” Barbour inquired about games played via Masters. Sadly Beaker this is not the case. Four games for the rangers through the year is the criteria. If you have played four play some more! Season is over halfway through so get your games in ladies and gentlemen.
 
Silver Circle is fast approaching
     Seven weeks till the one and only Wangaratta Rangers event of the season Silver Circle lucky ticket draw. Once again tickets will be soon available for $25 each. This years catering will be roast beef rolls and gravy. Cam Scott and Scott Jenkins on the mics and you the great folk come down for a good evening and “The Ranch” Tickets always sell fast so make sure you let us know if you want one.
 
Winter Solstice is here!
     This weeks sees the passing of the winter solstice. Now for the “Nambrok Men” means their one and only half Christmas. What will the theme be this year? If you are going, break out the jumpers and have a great night with the men from Nambrok.
 
Game Changer stats update.
     Batting statistics should be available in the next few weeks. The little helpers here at stats central have been working overtime and Game changer will be updated soon with all new and past results entered. Vooting carsdd will be available to players and supporters on game days as well. So if you get asked to vote just fill in the piee of paper and return it to Cam Scott. Cam will enter the results later.

Rounding Third by Line Drive May 31st 2016

Welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. Another week has gone by and another round of baseball was played in the North Eastern Baseball Association. Once again, spectacular conditions greeted the players and supporters down at Targoora Park for Sunday’s games. However, there were mixed results for the ladies and gentlemen who represent the Orange and Black. Orange squared off with Black for the return match between the two for the season. Black won by the score of 12-1. In the late game, Wangaratta Rangers Black suited up again, to take on North Albury Bears Gold Bears green got the early jump and were never challenged handing the Rangers Black squad a 13-2 defeat. This was the first loss for the year for the Ranger boys and has given them much to think about. Anyhow, enough about that, what else has been happening down at the Ranch? Much going on as usual. Enjoy the read.

T-Ball keeps on keeping on.
    It is great each Wednesday night to see, Bryan, “Moose” Wilson and his merry band of helpers, Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool and the Great man, Kevin Pool training the next group of Wangaratta Rangers. From what this scribe sees from the sidelines each week, the kids and the parents are really enjoying what you boys are trying to achieve for the future of the game in Wangaratta. Their skills continue to improve each week, and they are loving it. Look for Moose’s write ups on the Facebook page and on the Wangaratta Rangers website.

Azza’s Shutout
    Aaron Parker was working on a shutout against the Rangers Orange over the weekend and had the buys scoreless going into the last innings. However, things did not completely go to plan. Someone mentioned to Azza walking out, that the shutout was on. Orange had other ideas. After putting the leadoff on with a poor bit of field…..up stepped Jason, “The Game” Jonker,  who stood up and delivered a Line drive down the third baseline to score the runner. When Jonker reached first base he noted to Azza, “that’s your shutout gone!”

Wednesday night dinner. The next level.
    Last week saw Spin cook up a feast for the hardy souls who braved drizzly conditions down at The Ranch. The Spag Bol was up to the high expectations of the hungry punters. All went back for seconds.  This week tea is on again. Let’s hope it can meet the high expectations set by The Pres. $10 for meal and drink.  Come down for a chat and feed.  Get around the club ladies and gentlemen. Who will it be?

“We are the navy….” what, Butts?
     Rob “Butts” Seymour is one very happy supporter at this present time.  The last few years have tested his mettle as a Carlton fan. However this year, he has shown his true blue colors. He is happy to show off his blues jersey after the game, which he wears under his first team Wangaratta Rangers jersey. Thing is though Butts, will you back them when it comes to your turn in the punters club? That will really test him then!
The Punters are back!
    First man of the tin, Daniel Griffin finally jagged a collection of some notes for the punting collective. There have been calls for him to bet again. That’s how bad the boys have been going. Still, as they say, punting is a mugs game and at the moment the boys are looking like mugs! Still, you never know,  we may get a few more collects before winter is out.
‘Lep’ is on the horizon. 
    Now as this scribe says most years ‘Lep’ is not a typo. It means the hard noses of the North Eastern Baseball Association are off on their annual trip to the Victorian Winter Baseball Championships in Geelong, over the Queens Birthday long weekend. Many of the men who go, love the challenge of testing themselves against the other associations from around the state. There are a few changes to the Ranger contingent this year.
Travis, “Iceman” Frost, is returning after a few years absence. He was discussing with a friend of Line Drive that he was looking forward to it. Missing this year for the first time in a while is, ‘Masterchef’, Tetsu Kamiyama.
Good luck to all of the boys and supporters who are donning the Red and Blue of the North Eastern Baseball Association.
Separate cars
    Strange happenings on Sunday. looks like Aaron, “Azza” Parker is no longer Tetsu’s number one driver. They came to Targoora park in separate cars! Maybe this was a one off. Many know Tets gets a lift as often as he can when it presents itself!
Nambrok update
    The Nambrok boys have been keeping a low profile so far this season. Still, the boys know how to have a good time. This is the time of year for the creative crew to do some of their best work. They live for June and July. If you want to keep up with them just ask what they have been up to when you see them next!
Kev’s Newspaper Writeups
    The number one writer at Wangaratta Rangers is still Kevin Pool. Week in and week out, he keeps the Rangers in the local Wangaratta Chronicle. Big thanks must go to the Chronicle, for their continuing support and giving us a space in the newspaper for the write ups. The other day a photo even crept into the Border Mail. This was a boom for the tin as it’s a nice little collect for having your photo in the paper. Chopper McCullough knows the feeling well!
Any Gus sightings?   
    Has anyone seen Gus? Yes, he is still around and judging by the interesting posts on social media, he is just living the Gus life. Everyone either wants to be him or be with him.

Rounding Third by Line Drive May 23rd 2016

Welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third, your little insight into the happenings of the people who play baseball for Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. The boys and girls in Ranger land have had a great weekend. With a few people away this week the club called on some past players to help out.
Up the Hume Highway in Albury, the Rangers Orange boys and girls got the job done over Bears Gold, 14 to 6. Down at Benalla, the Rangers Black “replacements” squad defeated Benalla Bandits, 13 to 1. Some great pitching and defensive plays by Wangaratta kept the score from being closer. More about that later. Let’s get in to it.
The Replacements 
    With almost half the playing list not available for the weekend, the brains trust of the club had to come up with a plan to keep two teams out on the park playing baseball. Cam “The Soak” Scott hatched a plan a month ago to get Mick, “Big Cod” Brownlie and Ross, “Strawberry” Wilson to play. Another to put the uniform back on was Matty, “Colonel” Sanders. Colonel looked the part with his nice bright white boots. Colonel’s play lit up the field with great defensive plays at short stop. His best, a diving catch which he did not need to dive for. Nathan, “Rubberarm” Pool was impressed. Strawberry looked cool and calm in the field and it had been a few years since he played third base. His first throw went straight into the ground just in front of him. He did not need to throw after that anyway. Big Cod Brownlie and his laconic lefty swing hit the ball hard with little luck. Big thanks to Ross, Mick and Matty for helping the club out today. Hope to see you guys for another game during the year.
Who was that on the hill today, Who was behind the plate?
    With Aaron “Azza” Parker and Tetsu “Ramsay” Kamiyama playing in the Rangers Orange squad for the day, Manager Nathan, “Rubberarm” Pool had to get inventive. After throwing six innings last week, Pool was still a bit ginger. He managed to throw the first two innings and then went to Travis,”Iceman” Frost, who locked down the Benalla bats with his array on fastballs and loopy stuff. Frost did Pool sterling service, and backed up by some great defensive plays stretched out over three innings of work. A change was made behind the plate with Sean, “Doc” Warfe putting on the gear for the first time in a long time. Who was to throw? Pool went to resident first baseman Cam, “The Soak” Scott. Scott had not been on the hill since University Games days. He managed to get hit hard by the Benalla bats but gave up zero runs in two innings of throwing hard tailing fastballs. He even manged to throw a ball where Warfe wanted it! Scott will be glad when the others are back in the lineup as he thinks his pitching days are done. Watch this space. (For those who don’t know how Cam Scott throws. He does not throw hard. He throws batting practice beach ball sized pitches that EVERYONE can hit)

Strange moment of the weekend
     The Ranger lads were getting ready to play down at Benalla and while warming up a blue car came screaming into the ground. Someone remarked, “Hey Cam isn’t that your car?” Yes it was Cam’s car. Lauren “Mrs Soak” Grenfell came flying in and stopped behind the net. All nine of the Ranger players were wondering what she was doing. Then the car took off again with a wave and she was gone. A flying visit it was indeed. Mrs Soak was on her way home from a hens weekend in Melbourne with her friend and regular game attendee, Tracey, ‘T-Dog’ Knott. With both ladies feeling a little under the weather after a ‘busy’ weekend, their decision to keep heading toward home was a wise one.
The Skipper is back!
    Mick, “The Skipper” Wyatt has been away the past few weeks, but he has been keeping a keen eye on what has been going on down at the Ranch. Last Wednesday evening Wyatt was running around at training like the spring chicken he is. While the rest of the boys were still nursing soreness from a tough game on the previous Sunday. The skipper got his chance to play on Sunday in Albury, where he led the Orange boys to a resounding 14-6 victory over the Bears Gold team. Where will his allegiance lie next week when Rangers vs Rangers comes around once again? One thing this scribe knows is that he will love playing regardless of which team he is in.
Punting for Mugs  
    As the heading suggests, this is how well the boys are going on the punt at this current moment. Over the weekend once again the boys were close with little return. Let’s hope someone can jag a winner for the collective ‘mug.’
Spin’s Spag Bol
    This week at training, “The Pres” Tony Smith will be dishing up his delicious and delectable spag bol. The Rangers faithful need to vote with their feet and get down to the Ranch on Wednesday night for a hit a throw and a great feed for $10. If not just come down for the feed. Let Spin know on the Rangers Facebook page if you can make it down. Word is lefty Jack Bradburn is making a return this week!
Big Sunday
    A large day of baseball coming up on Sunday 29th of May. In the early game, Rangers Orange play host to Rangers Black. In the late game the Rangers back up and play against Bears Gold. Remember to make sure you put your unavailability online at team app and let our wonderful managers know if you are available. The more the merrier, let’s make it a big and successful day down at Targoora Park.
Where is the tin????
    The misdemeanors are racking up and the tin is no where to be seen. Remember to pay your dues to “Griff and the tin where you put your hard earned dollars in!”

Rounding Third By Line Drive May 17th 2016

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition into the goings on at the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. Last week the round was washed out with all grounds being unplayable. However this week glorious conditions greeted the players and supporters down at the Ranch on Sunday. IN the first game Rangers Orange put up a good fight but just could not get the knockout blow. They went down in a tough game to Porepunkah Panthers 8-5. In the afternoon game, it was a rematch of the grand final. Wangratta Rangers Black vs NASC Bears Green. Once again these two sides know how to turn up the blow torch on one another. A cracking game was played by both sides with Rangers Black coming out on top by the score of 8-2. A big thank you goes out to all the players, supporters scorers and umpires on the day for making the day down at Targoora Park a roaring success. Make sure you grab the Wangaratta Chronicle this week as I am sure Kev Pools write up will be a ripper! What else is news down at the Ranch? Well I am about to tell you.
Spins “Prez Prattle” the best yet? 
     With Line Drive having some technical issues over the weekend, it was awesome to read “Prez Prattle” on the Rangers Facebook page. His summary of the day, the week and what is going on down at Rangerland was absolutely spot on. Spin is doing a great job leading the dedicated committee and club who people who make up the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. Let’s all continue to get around him and the club throughout the season.
The Foreign Legion
      In discussion as the boys do while watching the Rangers Orange vs Porepunkah game, Travis “Iceman” Frost and Cam “The Soak” Scott were talking all things Rangers as they often do. The conversation led to players and where they have come from and played baseball before coming to Wangaratta. Looking through the list of players over fifty per cent have come from other clubs from Melbourne and of course our international contingent. Many have come to the club through word of mouth. This is continuing with our newest Ranger Katy Toll hitting the track this week. Great to have you down at the club Katy. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Pooly’s pitching masterclass
     Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool put on a masterclass of pitching against Bears Green over the weekend. Pooly managed to throw six innings with the field behind him giving him great support. By the final batter Pooly’s rubberarm had just about snapped by like the true ball player, got the out and went straight to the freezer for the bag of peas. He did find it tough watching the last few innings of the game. However the middle reliever Aaron “Azza” Parker and Bryan “Moose” Wilson got Pool the win.  Hope the arm is not too sore this week Rubberarm!
Drage steps up once again
    Mark Drage loves the big game. After a slow start to the season, Drage came alive in the grand final rematch. Drage hit the ball and ran the bases hard. Not to mention his defense was outstanding. His best play came with a miscommunication with a fly ball and managed to dive low and flip the ball to Tetsu Kamiyama’s waiting glove to get the force out at second base. Another great defensive effort was his throw back in from the fence which halted the runner at third and stopped all momentum Bears way. Great game Mark Drage.
What’s wrong with wood Moose?
    It was overheard in the past couple of weeks that Bryan “Moose” Wilson was not rapt with wood bats. However this scribe is led to believed this has all changed. In his last game with Rangers moose crushed a pitch over the left field fence which landed half way up the gum trees. he was not finished. He then legged out a double on a hard hit ball down the line. think he is feeling happier about the choice of wood bats now!
Grigg and Jonker lead the way in Orange.
    Looking over the score book from the early game, both Sam “Goggles” Grigg and Jason “JJ” Jonker had good games once again.  Goggles collected three hits and chased down everything that came his way in the outfield. Jonker week in week out throws a few innings and always gives Rangers Orange a chance for a win. With a few players to come back in to the side in the next few rounds, Orange will continue to get stronger.
Wednesday Night Dinner and Scorer’s School a success.
     Dinner last Wednesday was Chicken Parma and chips. Skilfully heated up by Nathan Pool and Tony Smith. Chief scorers Rob “Butts” Seymour and Kelsey “Burderonthedancefloor” Burder then took the rest of the Ranger players through a scorers clinic. First graduate of the scorer’s clinic was Steve “Fernando” Peruzzo. His book work in the early game against Panthers was flawless. The book was colour coded correctly as well. Good first start Fernando! To all players and supporters come down to training for a look and a feed every Wednesday. All are welcome.
Voting on Team app  
    This year the club has introduced voting on team app. Each week four persons are asked to vote on the Orange game and four on the black game. They receive a notification on their phone to vote. They then have till Tuesday to place their votes in. Anny problems or questions see Cam Scott for more details.
Ranger Ramble 2016  
    The dates are set. The location is decided upon. Theme there is an idea. Adelaide is the venue for this year’s Ranger Ramble. This will be held over the AFL grand final weekend from Friday 30th of September to Monday 3rd of October. Past trips have been crackers and the boys are saving their pennies hard to make sure this trip is not one to miss. For more information on the trip see master of the tin Daniel “The Griff” Griffin for finer details.
Griff and the Tin  
    Ranger faithful, be sure to place your bottom of the bag gold in the fines tin for your strike outs and other misdemeanors seen fit by the committee of the tin. Griff will be coming after you for it. Most important rule is not to upset the master of the tin. Isn’t that right Rob Seymour?

    Speaking of the man called Griff he is busy editing the hours of footage from the Ranger derby the other week. In the next few weeks the finished product will be available. Commentary is provided by the umpire. Will be surely one not to miss.

    Two players are returning the the Orange and Black this week. Mick “Chief Cod” Brownlie and Ross “Strawberry” Wilson are chomping at the bit to return to the diamond. It has been a while for both players but it is great to have the Yarrawonga crew back in the fold. Hope you enjoy your return appearances.
Hello Jack B
    Just a small shout out to Jack Bradburn. Hope to see him down at training and back on the park soon. Lefty numbers are quite small at Rangers. With Jack there it increases by one third! Always been known in baseball circles that lefties do it better.

Rounding Third by Line Drive May 3rd 2016

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. Baseball was on the agenda over the past weekend with The Ranger men battling it out against one another down at the windy Ranch on Sunday. In the showdown, the Rangers Black overpowered a very determined and rapidly improving Rangers Orange lineup. Rangers Orange had multiple chances to upstage their much fancied opponent but just could not get over the line. The scoreline of 13-4 is not a true reflection on how close this game was till the final inning. There were a few personal bests for the day but why spoil a good story? You are just going to have to keep reading to find out!

Fernando delivers again
Better not forget that the quiet achiever Steve  “Fernando” Peruzzo is adding to his tally of long balls for Wangaratta. After hitting two with wood last eyar against Porepunkah, Fernando added another home run to his tally. When Peruzzo hits a ball it certainly stays hit. Poor Jason Jonker found this out first hand but more was to come….

Jenkins. Is putting it all together
Man of beard and these days seems to be ever present in Rounding Third.
Scott “The Hammer” Jenkins is white hot with the timber at this present moment in the season. Coming off a five hit game up at Porepunkah and a couple of hits against Wodonga, Jenkins followed up with a day out. After not wanting to swing in his first at bat and paying the full price for looking at three straight strikes, “The Hammer” unleashed a monster shot over a stationary Brad “Undies” Murdoch at left field. It was Jenkins first home run for Wangaratta.  He was not finished. In his last at bat Jenkins proved it was no fluke and pounded another well over the fence. Multiple home run day for Scotty Jenkins. Congratulations #14

Moose’s Vision
Wangaratta’s favorite Canadian, Bryan “Moose” Wilson was very busy before the showdown on Sunday. You see Dan “Griff” Griffin and Moose had organised to use four gopros to film footage of the game. One each side of the diamond, one on Tetsu’s helmet and the other on Rob “Butts” Seymour umpires face-mask. Moose has been wanting to film a Rangers game all year and he finally got his wish over the weekend. The highlights of the vision will be the three home run swings and other little unique plays such as Buttsy getting hit in the mask by a ball and  Brad “Undies” Murdoch cover drive for a hit. One must say it was a great idea to have this vision for games and will be great to view in the future.

Chopper takes to the mound.
Multi sport athlete Dan “Chopper” McCullough is really getting into his baseball.
He, under the respected tuteledge of Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool, threw three innings of baseball against Rangers Black. For his first real outing on the hill as we call it in baseball speak, Chopper threw very well. In a short amount of time Chop, had mastered the art of the curve ball. Most new guys who take to the mound just want to get it over the plate and straight not try different pitches. Greta job Chop. Another to eat up some innings in a game is always appreciated.

Who owes money to the tin for what?
The local derby each time is double fines for the Ranger players. Many pay their dues and accpet the Tin Master’s verdict on their actions. Others do not. Tetsu “Heston” Kamiyama falls into the latter category. After leaving his helmet at Porepunkah a couple of weeks back Tetsu was subbed out of the derby and took on coaching duties. This all sounds very standard, but Tetsu made a few other players very jealous while still playing. So the boys took it out on him and doubled his dues for the day. To Tet’s credit he did pay his dues after the game in the form of a couple of refreshments for the boys.

The threat from centre field
One thing Mark “The Rage” Drage likes doing is patrolling centre field. The other is throwing runners out. Drage took great pleasure in throwing out a runner at third from his number one position. He let out a large audible roar after doing so. One remarked the arm must be getting better. Drage replied “always got one good throw in it each game!”

Rounding Third By Line Drive April 26th 2016

Hello and welcome to this weeks edition of Rounding Third. Much has happened in the past couple of weeks since Line Drive wandered along to the baseball. The two Ranger sides have had a mixed opening to the season. It was good to see over the past weekend that the Rangers Orange squad get the job done against Wodonga Warriors Maroon, while the Rangers Black squad had the week off with a make up double-header to be played later in the year. More about that later on. Now down to business
Rangers Orange bats come alive
    It has been a slow start for the Orange squad this season. Over the past couple of weeks, there has not been much to cheer about on the scoreboard. The boys have worked hard the past couple of training nights and that work paid off against Wodonga Warriors Maroon. Looking at the score book four players hat three hits while the “Mayor of Nambrok” Kelsey Burder led the way with five hits. It has taken a little time to adjust to the wooden bat but looks like things are turning around for the boys and their upcoming showdown against the Wangaratta Rangers Black line up.
Jenkins is in the swing of things
    Now we all like good hitting and good hitting stories. Now here is a man to look for out on the diamond Man of beard Scott “Moneyman” Jenkins has tinkered with his right hand swing. He was telling Line Drive Wednesday night at training that he just moved his front elbow a little and relaxed a bit more. This little adjustment has seemed to work a treat. Last week up at Porepunkah, Jenko went five for five, driving in three runs. Not all singles either. The Moneyman hit the ball with power with two doubles registered. He came on late in the game over the weekend and continued his red-hot form with the bat.
Frost: The Big Freeze
    One of the best on field leaders of Wangaratta Rangers Travis “The Big Freeze” Frost is swinging a hot bat too. He even put in a couple of innings work on the mound up at Porepunkah. From the look of the score book Frost had it all going on. Let’s hope he can keep it rolling along all season.
Wednesday night meals are back!
    Wednesday night meals have returned for another season. Cam “The Soak” Scott was thinking on his weekly drive over that gee it would be good to eat at a good hour. So he took it on his own to organise meals the past two weeks. The other boys are happy with that. They get the benefits too. First week was Soaks BBQ. Last week saw Jenko’s Pie night and this week, Dim sims and hot chips is on the menu. Numbers have been consistent down at the Ranch this season but it is always good to see a couple more come down have a throw and a feed. Everyone likes dim sims and chips! Wait till the real competition heats up when the weather gets cooler.
Ranger Ramble news
    Well it has been decided on a tentative date of Ranger Ramble 2016. Destination as stated before is Adelaide. The boys have been talking about the date and it looks to be the last weekend in September. Those who are looking to take part are starting to look at flights now for the weekend. One things for sure the two Dans plan a great trip.
Be aware of Griff and the tin. Where you put your fines in.
    Master of the tin, Daniel “The Griff” Griffin is keeping am eagle eye on all proceedings every Sunday. From forgetting your helmet or glove running out onto the field, to strike outs and double plays, Dan is looking for any misdemeanors. To stay away from any tiffs make sure you look after the man Griff.
It’s a game changer
    This year has seen the introduction of the use of Game Changer software. So far this year, Rangers results and some statistics have been entered on using the game changer online platform. Game Changer is an app designed for baseball, softball and basketball scoring. The first few games have been entered with a variety of stats. They aim to be accurate, however like anything humans can make an error from time to time. Go and have a look https://gc.com/ go and become a fan of Wangaratta Rangers Orange and Wangaratta Rangers Black season 2015/16. (the admin did not know how to change the season till later!) Now there are things the admins are working through with so bear with it till we work out how we use it most efficiently. In the long run it will be a game changer!
The competition is back to eight teams.
    Very pleasing to hear that there are once again eight teams in the North Eastern Baseball Association. NASC Bears have decided to enter a second team which is good news and removes the bye. The more teams the better.
The Yarrawonga connection
    The bosses at Wangaratta have put the call out to the Yarrawonga connection Mick “The Big Cod” Brownlie and Ross “Strawberry” Wilson for possibly one-off appearances in May. They have both agreed to make the trek over for one off (or maybe more) guest appearances in a few weeks time. Will be great to see you boys back in the Orange and Black of the Wangaratta Rangers.
Ranger Showdown this coming weekend.
    The first Ranger vs Ranger showdown is this coming weekend. Orange plays Black down at Targoora Park on Sunday. Both teams will be looking to get one up on their opposite numbers. In past years these games have been played hard and in great spirit. Definitely the one game all Ranger players like to win during the regular season. Come down have a look Sunday from 1pm onward.
Wanted: Line Umpires and Scorers
    Each week the club is in need of line umpires for away games and scorers for all games. So far this year a few have put their hands up to do the job. The club is looking for more people who would like to give umpiring the bases and scoring a go. Line umpiring is a good way to watch the game closely. You could only be required once to do it all year. If you are interested make sure you put your hand up to help out. It is worth it.

Rounding Third By Line Drive April 10th 2016

Hello and welcome once again to another edition of your one and only insight into the people and personalities, which make up the Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club. It has been a few weeks since the ‘CODS’ edition and much has been going on down at “The Ranch”. The sun was shining and many were eager to hit the diamond for the opening round of the 2016 North Eastern Baseball Association season . All games were played down at “The Ranch”, in Wangaratta. In the early game, The Wondonga Warriors, with some middle inning clutch hitting, overcame Wangaratta Rangers Orange 9-1.  In the later game, the reigning premiers, Wangaratta Rangers Black, were too strong for Wodonga Warriors Maroon by a score of 21-4. Benalla played Porepunkah on diamond two and Porepunkah came out on top. It was great to see all the familiar faces, characters  and most importantly supporters, that make up the North Eastern Baseball Association. All are looking forward to the next fourteen weeks of matches throughout the season. Best wishes to all clubs involved. Now what else has been going on? Keep reading and you may just find out!

Skipper takes the reigns for another year

Mick ,”The Skipper” Wyatt has had a great off season. From winning major raffle prizes to having good times away with his family, Mick has been doing it all. Now he has turned his hand back to The Rangers Black squad. Mick has taken the reigns for this year to be ably supported by Nathan “Rubberarm” Pool. Once again Mick leads from the front. This was evident in the weekends game against Wodonga Warriors. Just having purchased new pants, “The Skipper” hit, slid, dived and did it all in the Rangers victory over the Warriors. He did remark at one stage, “can I get a refund on these pants?” after he put a hole through them in their first outing out of the bag. I am sure you can put some sewing into those knees for the next few weeks Skip.

Burder leads the Orange Squad

The Godfather of Nambrok, Kelsey “Burderonethedancefloor” Burder, has put his hand up to be the skipper of the Wangaratta Rangers Orange squad for season 2016. Year in year out Kelsey works hard for the club on and off the field. He will be ably supported by his trusty lieutenants, Kyle “Thrillmore” Gilmore and Brad “Undies” Murdoch. Not to mention the wise heads of Jason “JJ” Jonker and Brendon “Frenchy” French and many others. Great job Kelsey for putting your hand up to do this important job for the club.

Thommo welcome to Wangaratta.

There is a phrase that Line Drive likes. ‘Always good to see good people’. This was the case today when Boneo baseball club legend, Brett Thompson came down to have a look at baseball North East Style. He had all his gear in the car and Kelsey Burder told him to suit up. Thommo has a wealth of baseball experience and knowledge and is looking forward to partaking in baseball the Ranger way. In many ways Ranger Baseball is very similar style to Boneo Braves Baseball. Play hard and have a good time doing it. Welcome to Brett and his wife Lyn to Wangaratta Rangers Baseball Club.

 Who is wearing my helmet?

Those who play baseball are a funny lot. From not stepping on lines, to the way the ball is thrown around the infield, superstition and method play a big part in this great game. Now a few Ranger boys have bought their own helmets and the only one who NEVER has an issue with someone taking their helmet is Tetsu, “The Fly” Kamiyama. Now why does Testu never have an issue with this, compared to Rob “Butts” Seymour and Nathan Pool? Tetsu has his number on the outside of his helmet. Butts was getting a little more steamed than usual over the weekend, as others kept taking his helmet. Cam “The Soak” Scott was not helping his mood by declaring, “Is this anyones lid? Is it okay if I use this lid?”  every time he went to put his batting helmet on. The Soak then went on to offer to buy some numbers to put on the back of the helmet when Buttsy replied “It’s on the inside of the helmet.” Butts, please put your number on the back of the helmet like the vast majority of ball players do.

Griff and the Tin. That’s where you put your fines in.

Hume highway veteran Daniel, “The Griff” Griffin, is in charge of what is now known as “Griff’s Tin” He will be on the sharp eye for misdemeanors on and off the diamond this year. Already the tin has got off to an unfortunate start with just a “couple” of strike outs against Warriors White. From walking out onto the diamond without a hat to just doing something fine worthy, Griff will be after you. All in good jest of course.

Wanted. Those willing to have a go on the pitchers plate.

It was pleasing to see today two boys have a go on the pitcher’s rubber. Daniel “Chopper” McCullough for Orange and Scott “The Beard” Jenkins for Rangers Black.  One thing every club is looking for, are players willing to have a throw and gobble up some innings for their club. It looks like the Rangers have unearthed a couple of hungry innings eaters. Let’s hope they stick at it. The more the merrier.

Wednesday Night T-Ball returns

Champions of T-Ball Bryan, “Moose” Wilson and Kevin “Don’t need gifts” Pool, will be kicking off another term of Wednesday night T-Ball from 5pm on Wednesdays.  Last term, over twenty kids honed their skills under the many different coaches the Rangers baseball club employs. If you are looking for something to do, come down early and give the boys a hand. The future is  bright for the Wangaratta Rangers.

Punters Club is back

For those who are interested in a flutter on most things that run around, come see Cam “The Soak” Scott and register your interest in the Punters Club. It’s $10 a week for the duration of the season. The collective bets half and saves half. At the end end of the season you have the choice of a payout, or use it towards the End of Season trip. Destination: Adelaide. Your choice. Online is a Gamechanger

How things are changing in our world. Most things we once did by the committee are now done virtually through the many realms of the world wide web. The club has introduced ‘Game Changer’. This is an online scoring application, where scores will be entered and uploaded. For more information look up http://www.gc.com and just type in Wangaratta’s postcode to find the teams of Orange and Black.
